Looking to get some indoor range time throughout the winter months, and hoping to get some advice, shared experiences about shooting indoors in OTTAWA.

As far as I know the only indoor range is the RA centre but I do not know anybody who is an actual member there. I have sent an email to the RA CENTRE asking for information and they never replied.

I am looking to join ISPC & IDPA competitions, not bench shooting.

I'm a member of the RA centre. .22 cal rifles only, but just about any handgun. it's a 20yard range. They do have ISPC nights, check out their calendar on the website for what days are what.

Hey thanks for the info. I checked and they seem to have a lot of IPSC activities, and at least one every Thursday, I am looking to get at least 1 day of shooting a week or more, so that is good.
How does it work if I want to check it out, are guests allowed to go and shoot before joining?, any mandatory courses?

Guest can come and shoot, but you will need a member to supervise you. Monday nights would be the best to check it out. You will only need to take the safety courses if you are a member.

Since action shooting is the only thing I am interested in, How can I join IPSC as a guest? I assume they have a safety officer running the course of fire so in that case I will not need supervision. Do you think this is possible?

I am RA member, for IPSC only i never go on any other occasion.
First thing if you wish to shoot IPSC over there you have to be black badge qualified, if you're not it's maybe your next step?

Edit, we do not shoot from the bench at IPSC nights. From the holster, small to medium courses of fire. The guys are very creative given the limited space.

Come over on Thursday, after 6. You will be able to talk and possibly shoot at general session, and there is IPSC practice after.
You should be able to talk to RO and see what is going on.

oh that is great news.
Perfect, I do not have a black badge certification but I have been shooting IDPA consistently for the last year (and doing very good in competitions). Not sure whether I need the black badge certification or not but I will do it if it is mandatory.

I doubt they will let you participate in the club level IPSC sessions without a BB (requirements for club level events are set by the individual club). You should be looking into signing up for one as soon as you can. Your IDPA participation will not be recognised by IPSC. Obviously you need a BB for sanctioned matches.

Cheers

I understand that. Not trying to shoot without it, just going as a guest. Not really interested if I have to do all that before going as a guest, I do not even know if I will like IPSC, I do like IDPA a LOT, but there are not IDPA activities throughout the winter so I was thinking of joining another group of shooters for the winter months. I shoot a lot, around 1000 rounds a month, but it's difficult now, last IDPA match is this Saturday and after that nothing until March, and I want to keep shooting.

I have never tried IPSC because IDPA was enough until now. I am not sure if I am going to like it though, I don't like race guns, red dots, or anything that modifies pistols in any way, so I am planning to (if/when) shoot IPSC with my standard factory iron sights HK P30L 9mm.
Again, I would like to give it a try first so I am hoping to hook up with someone here that can introduce me to this group, give it a try, if it's a go, then I will do the mandatory courses, IPSC fees, black badge fees, range FEES, and all that....we are talking of a lot of money here, close to $500 or more.

Check with the Club Rep...but I am almost certain as a non BB guest...you will not be allowed to participate in a club level IPSC practice...

Although it is probably not worth the trip for you, there is an indoor range in the Vankleek Hill area that I am currently in the process of joining. From what I understand the range is 50 yds and 22's are Ok as well as handguns of any caliber. I think there are 4 shooting stations but since I have not been I am not positive if that is correct. FYI, their website is vkhgc dot ca.

Sure I can do that for the SO peace of mind, although in all honest considering all the experience I have and being one of the best shooters at my range (I want to add the word decent-shot so I don't sound like an a$$hat) and being at the top in local at IDPA competitions, EOSC, SMITH FALLS and among my local IDPA GROUP, I think the black badge course would be a waste of my money (if it is a safety and holstering oriented course) and would rather use that money towards training on handgun speed, reloading, with a tactical professional... I am not a newbie, but I understand others at the range or group do not know me and 'safety first', I am all good with that, so bottom line, if there is no other choice that doing it in order to join, I will.

I wonder why Instead of being all separate organizations there is niot one homogeneous group or ORG that could share a database of shooters, then, the different disciplines could have different rules but at least cover the basics such as safety. That way it would be easier to browse through different activities/shooting disciplines instead of jumping the same HOOP 2 times, like in my case. All safety courses should be unified allowing the shooter to join any organization he likes.

I think this type of prohibitionist rules (like separate safety courses) are great to demote the sport.

How come no one though about this before? ...blows my mind!

Thank for all the help!
If anyone here is going to the range this Thursday, please let me know so I can introduce myself. Thanks.

I am sure they would let him try the course out. He would start in the ready postition instead of off the holster, static reloads, walking slowly only and stuff...
This here is the link for the upcomming BB courses, unfortunatly it'S empty atm

Just a fyi, i am at Eosc every friday afternoon. I only missed 2/3 fridays (good weather fridays as colder than -10/12 forget it) in the last 2 years, so it´s a given that i will be there.
PM me for knowing how to recognize me, and feel free to ask the questions in real person if you wish. Myself have not been to the RA too often yet, i try to extend the outdoor season as much as possible.

As for black badge, if you do take it at the RA i am sure you won't be dissapointed, the man running these courses is highly qualified. He is a black badge teacher instructor, which means he teaches courses to become black badge teachers. The BB course is not all that much in $$$, and you'll get to shoot at least 500/600 rounds, you'll be familiar with the RA by then. I'm sure you will at least learn a thing or two there. Once black badged the is some private training available around too.

I am ok with that, I will do it.
I am not at EOSC unless there is an IDPA practice or match so I don't go often. I really like it there and the guys running it (Greg & Joe) are great.

I am hoping to swing by RA this week, I would like to hook up with someone from this forum so they can introduce to the group instead of bombing the practice with no previous notice.

Email Tim, the Section Officer on the Exec.
He is scheduled to be there this Thursday.
IPSC/Action: Tim Lacroix phone – 819-664-5636
e-mail – IPSC_rep_RA@hotmail.ca

I do not shoot IPSC and Tim would not know my CGN persona.

Check the RA Calendar. We also have ISSF on Wednesdays.

Mondays (evenings), parts of Thursdays (evenings) and Saturdays (mornings) are Bullseye shooting from benches
at 20 yds in 10 minute relays. No holsters. All handgun calibers (except .22 Magnums. They dent the backstop steel.)
