Does anyone hunt deer under 600 yards anymore?

I prefer to hunt and shoot deer really close. I like face shots. They just taste better to me that way!

I know the ethics police wont like that answer either so yes, I only shoot deer broadside, under a hundred yards and never through the shoulder. Anything over that and I let them walk away. LOL!

I grew up in the Zululand bush - walk and stalk is the only hunting we ever did, all of the animals shot by myself or my family was done under 250 meters.

If we spotted game further away we would stalk it, venison is expensive where I come from - if you shot and missed - you still payed - that kept the long range shooting down to 200 / 250 meter at most.

The "one shot kudu hunt" that I partipated in every year (Eastern Cape) no one shot over 250 meter, the land owners simply forbade it, tracking a kudu in that bush for hours / days, is something best left for well heeled Foreign hunters who just just paid through the nose for the trophies.

Most of the game I've bagged happens within 100 yards here in BC near the coast, but sometimes MUCH closer...further north, the longest shot taken I've taken was a moose at 275 yards w/ .338 WM...one shot and down he went. If the conditions were right (solid rest, favorable wind, known range etc.) I wouldn't hesitate to go out to 500 or so with my 7mm RM because I've got a great load for it, have all the ballistic data needed and I've had plenty of practice shooting long range. I wouldn't take the shot if it didn't feel "good".

Reading the other posts on this board - I have to Ask - Does anyone hunt deer under 600 yards anymore?

Not to be a smart arse but everyone hunts deer under 600 yards; I can't think of any hunter who would look at a deer closer and say "nope, not far enough, let it go"...

I will never post at what range I take ANY game at on this forum.

10 yards , you are an elitist snob.

300+ , you are irresponsible , unethical and breaker of some commandment in someone's bible.

Those that don't hunt much have to belittle someone to make themselves feel better ;)

I would love to make a long range shot like that. Maybe one day, but so far I'm more than happy with my stalking/pushing bush shots.

For sure it is really terrain dependant. Here's our view when deer hunting. Sometimes you can get close...other times you can't. The closest tress in this picture are about 300 yards away.

I practice at extended ranges, but the longest I've ever shot an animal was about 80 yards, other than varmints. I was with a fellow in the states on an antelope hunt and while his was a great long range shot, it felt more like 3 dimensional target shooting than hunting. For me, its not the ability to make the first shot, thats the easy one. Its the second shot to put down the wounded animal that decides whether I take the first. If I can't be confident in my second shot ability I will get closer or pass.

Why would you need a second shot if the first one is easy? Don't think I've ever considered a second shot in my life.

Because things don't always go how you think they will. Its part of planning for the unexpected and trying to ensure that I am behaving in the most ethical manner possible. I guess then, that you only have one round in your rifle, since you've never considered a second shot?

I should go through my old thread and see how many long distance hunters crapped all over me for shooting a buck at 420yards with an xlr 30-30
