I have a chance to get a used Colt 38 Super. I'm a big fan of the 1911, and have several.

Norinco, Spartan, S.A.M., GSG, and Kimber conversion kit. In calibers .22, 9mm, 40S&W and 45ACP.

But no Colt or 38 Super. Any reason why not to get the 38 Super. I reload and will buy Starline brass.

A thousand cases will last me a lifetime (I don't have that much time to go).:)

Any advise will be greatly appreciated, thank-you.
 
Had a Behlert Precision single chamber comp gun on a Series 70 Colt back in the day. Excellent pistol, very fast and accurate.

The guys at my club at the time let me shoot silhouette with it one day and I saw they were snickering. As soon as I started shooting and scoring, someone came up and told me it was illegal for their game. :)

Buy it, it's the original hot 9mm.
 
I bought a Taurus (Dirt McGirt EDC Edition), in 38 Super.

What an awesome cartridge!

Factory .38super is about as hot as factory 9mm Luger. You need to load to get proper performance out of it. 1600fps with a 115gr bullet is around the best you will get out of it in a 5" barrel.

Something to be mindful of.... what vintage of "Colt" in ".38 Super"?

The modern ones, the way the barrel is chambered, case headspaces on the case mouth, taking advantage of the full accuracy potential of the ctg. A good thing.

On the old [original/vintage] ones, the way the barrels were chambered, case headspaces on the case rim [the .38 ACP/Super is a semi-rimmed case] - accuracy generally not as good as above.

i've always liked the cartridge. 20-30 yrs ago, factory loads were 130gr at 1300ft/sec. now it is hard to find factory 38 super, and if you do, it is loaded to moderate 9mm specs. i guess you need to reload to take advantage of this round. if it was more available i would jump on a 1911 that chambers it. (too bad the 9x23 died too)

Wonder if anybody heard of the term "Superface", or even gone through it...?
 
John Dillinger preffered .38 Supers because they could penetrate FBI vests that could stop .45s.

Only the finest for killing government agents!
