I am going to get a sxs shotgun for cowboy action. I found some that are made by Century Arms and they come in 12 and 20 gauge with exposed hammers.

Which one do you guys recommend? is 20 gauge even legal for cow boy action?

I'd go with the 12... The nice thing about that is if you still wanna shoot 20g shells, you can always get the adapters for it. Just my opinion though.

20 ga. is legal, but when shooting "swinger" targets or "knockdowns" you may have difficulty.
I have seen "swingers" have to be shot again, because there was a question in the RO or Spotter's mind that it was a solid hit or the knockdown didn't fall.
IMHO you're better off with a 12 ga. since you can usually find AA's on sale, but I haven't noticed 20 ga.
Might be a different story if you're loading 20
Welcome to the fun.

20 gauge is legal, but it's harder to find shells, the recoil is about the same (lighter gun, and hard to find light loads in 20). The one advantage of 20 gauge is that the shells are smaller and if you have small hands it can be a little easier to grab 2 for your reloads. That's the only possible advantage in my opinion. My daughter shot both 20 & 12 (with Winchester feather lite shells) when she was about 13, and prefered the 12 gauge. Kicked less. My 2 cents

12 gauge Win "AA" shells have a lighter recoil, cost less and 12 ga is more readily accessible than 20 ga. I always carry 5-10 rds of #5 or #6 shot in my guncart just incase I run into targetry at club matches where #7 1/2 or #8 shot won't take them down.

I have always shot 12ga, my 1st shotgun was a SxS Stoeger Hamerless Coachgun. it was a blast to shoot (litteraly).:)
Now it's a 1878 repro hammer gun and that is even more fun.
I shoot Federal trap shells at 60.00/ case, they work well and I have no issue with recoil.
Have at it and have fun!

Where did you get the hammer shotgun?

At times, you may see a Norinco hammered shotgun come up for sale.
New, they were around the 325 to 350 a couple of years ago.
Built like a tank: "Strong Like Bull!"
New, you may find it needs to have rough edges on the hammers filed or honed to lessen your blood loss, LOL but once that's taken care of and perhaps the chambers honed by your g'smith it should out last you.
If you buy one used, this may already have been done.
