Just picked up this 25-20 any info you guys can give me on it? i know it was built in 1905!!!! what are they worth? its been drilled and tapped, i have no interest in selling it, but this thing is a diamond in the rough

I have a 1903 Savage sporter bolt action in 25-20. I had it restored a couple years ago and am super happy with it. Great cartridge for close range game up to coyote size, although im sure it would take a deer at the right range (wink wink). I personally reload for mine because finding ammo is next to impossible and when you do, its cotly. Speer 75 grain work very well.

Thanks! i was given a new mag tube for it, the barrel has had something done to it, its got a strange crown on it.... im not sure, im excited! its no collector but the price was right!
 
my 25-20 likes 10 gr IMR3031 pushing a 85 grain bullet. the Cooey combination gun i have has one single barrel 25-20 and another barrel .410. great gopher-grouse package.
 
I could never get 3031 to work in mine.
An 86 gr. bullet over 8.0 gr. H110 with a CCI 450 primer, same bullet over 12.0 IMR 4198, and a 60 gr. Hornady over 10.0 gr. 2400 are the loads my old 1892 SRC likes best.
 
I suggest annealing your brass regularly. We just got done pulling a bunch of someone else's reloads because most of the necks were cracked, I figure from bullet seating, and most of the ones that weren't cracked their necks on firing. That must have been some brittle old brass...

Mind you the guy had been loading 11.1 of 2400 with, I believe, the 60gr hornady, which my data shows as just past max.
 
Good to know Kevan, when I get set up here down south I'll give you a call, I have a couple hundred rounds to load and bullets just haven't finished burning up the factories I bought yet and not set up for loading here just yet. I have a rifle and a SRC to try out loads for.
 
You have a model 1892 sporting rifle, standard version(24 inch round barrel, full mag, crescent butt). Looks like the barrel and mag tube have been cut because the barrel should be flat without any crown at all. The drilled action and doctored barrel pretty much destroy collector value but might make a good shooter if the bore is good and the barrel crown isn't buggered up. Value is probably around $400 IMO. The tang sight is a nice bonus worth around $150 by itself. Good that you have a mag tube as long as it is for the smaller calibre 1892, the .38/40 and .44/40 magazine is larger in diameter.

Really..........400 bucks, I wouldn't put it over 300, but then they are still a nice little rifle even if the collector value is zero, you may be right. Wow, to think a butchered 92 is worth 400 bucks is distressing, I remember when it wouldn't have brought 100........

The $400 is mainly the parts value. The wood will fit an 1894 also except the forend has a little narrower barrel channel due to the smaller dimensions of the .25 WCF AND .32 WCF barrels. A good butt stock is worth $200 or so, the forend probably $75, sights $200 plus, all the action parts probably $200 if sold seperate. That's what happens to a lot of these old Winchesters that are worn or irreversably altered from factory in some way. Guys part them out on Ebay and Gunbroker. Kind of a shame, some of them still deserve to go hunting but the parts are also used to rejeuvenate other old timers.

Yeah, I wish I had spent A LOT MORE on Winchesters 20 to 30 years ago. I would have some real nice high condition guns and not a fortune tied up either.
