Weatherby Vanguard S2 .300 wby mag?

Anyone got one?? Im lookin at one right now as they are on sale right now at cabelas, and am pondering getting one for my dad for chirstmas, but I dont know if the ol roy is worth it over the win mag. It'll used for whitetail, mulies the odd moose/elk and maybe a balck bear. When i say odd i mean one in every 5-6 years. Neither of us reload (yet) but we will within the next couple years.
 
I've got a couple .300 Weatherbys, 4 Win Mags and a RUM. Three of them are even on Vanguards. Whether its worth it or not is a judgement call. Is it worth it for the higher priced factory ammo? Probably not. Is it worth the noticeably extra recoil for a bit of speed you might not get? Probably not. Is it worth it to run a .300 Roy in a 24" barrel? Maybe not.

I'd go with the .300 Win. Save the .300 Weatherby for the handloaders with 26" barrels. If you're going to get belted, you may as well get the speed. Handloading makes the price difference negligible. All that's left is to curse the freebore. You can bet that the Win is going to outshoot the Roy.
 
I bought an S2 in .300Win this year, fantastic rifle, very accurate and nice to shoot.

As Dogleg stated, I wouldn't go for the .300Wby just due to the cost of the shells, it doesn't pan out to me.

I bagged a whitetail with it this hunting season, and I will say it is a little on the large size for a whitetail, Mind you i've seen .308 and .30-06 do some nasty damage as well. Next year I hope to finally get drawn for Moose or Elk and figure it'll be spot on for them.
 
As much as I love the 300 Wby, I have to agree with Dogleg's logic, I also don't have a bad word to say about the 300 WM. If you don't load go for the Win Mag for sure, there is no such thing as cheap factory ammo for the Wby and without reloading you cannot take advantage of the extra case capacity and you can't minimize the long throat. I have used both extensively and you'll never see a difference shooting factory ammo.
 
Now a better question, is a .300 wm superior to a 7mm rem mag? For the same use as stated, cause out here 7mm seems to be more dominant over the 300
 
"...used for whitetail..." Too much cartridge for any of those. Weatherby ammo is horrendously expensive and not easy to find. A box of .300 Weatherby runs $64.99 at Cabelas Canada. On back order as well.
Mind you, anything with Weatherby on it is more expensive. Kind of like Cadillac. Anyway, a Vanguard is made by Howa in Japan(high end kit) and can be found for less under that brand. Don't know who carries 'em.
 
Prohet River has Howa there sunray.
The Vanguard is a great platform, but the 300 Wby doesn't have much of an advantage over the Winchester. Negligible as far as trajectory is concerned.
 
Thanks for the info guys. Ill probably end up buyin him either a weatherby S2 or tikka in 7mm rem mag, plan B is a 300 win mag or WSM depending on what they have when i make the trip up to the big city!

This may just be me, but I find my 270 win Tikka T3 kicks hard for that calibre. I would not be interested in shooting one in 300 WM. I also shoot a 338 WM in a Savage so I'm not a total light weight. There is something about that T3 stock and hockey puck butt plate that makes my shoulder ache especially when wearing just a t shirt. Love the gun otherwise. I'm gonna put a Limbsaver on it next year.

I would be putting a limbsaver on right away and a bit of a heavier scope to put a extra pound on
