Galt Sportsman Club

If you like shot gun sports this is in my opinion the best club Ontario!!!!!
Skeet,Trap, 5 stand, FITASC, & sporting clay!!!!!!!!!
The sporting clay is completely automated you use a shoot card and put as many targets on the card you wish to shoot.
This even allows a single shooter the ability to go and practice. Set the counter up for single shooter and push the button 3 seconds later the target comes!
Open Sundays in the winter Wed. & Sun. summer.
Next shoot Dec. 21 100 sporting targets, 25 5 stand targets, & 25 FITASC targets all 3 for 100.00
You can shoot one two or all of these clay target games.

Galt has always been a top notch shooting facility. We used to get a group together twice or so a year and make the trip. However the price for non members, and the nasty attitude towards outsiders is terrible. Never have I been treated so rudly by any club I have shot at. I get the impression they really don't want non members shooting there. Now no one has any interest in going there. We can shoot twice at another club and be treated fairly, for tthe same cash.
I spoke with one of their directors about it couple years back. He said there was a problem and they were working on it. Hope to come back soon and try again.

First I've heard about Galt and an attitutde towards outsiders asa blanket statement. Worst I have seen was individuals (unknown if members or not) getting a tad upitty with poeple who goof around and lounge it during a session of skeet when it was busy (aka line-ups for usage). As you say it was a few years ago, I would guess that the problem was resolved.
Plus considering that Non-Members provide a huge portion of the revenue for the club (clays section), that would seem that they had better be welcoming to the public.

Now we just got to get you into the other areas that Galt has available...
Handguns, Rifle, Archery, Fishing :)

Compared to people who belong to the club and shoot there once or twice a week the revenue from walk-in non-member guests who might shoot there once or twice a year is insignificant. The club would not miss the revenue if it stopped accepting non-member guests. It definitely would not miss the problems caused by them.

Non-member behavior has been an off-again/on-again issue at the club. I've seen it first hand. Members aren't perfect but there are proportionately far more problems with non-member guests who don't obey safety rules and become argumentative when reminded that safety glasses are required, you can't shoot from just anywhere, only load two, target loads only and open or out are all taken seriously.

To expand on some of the prior comments about shooter / member behavior at Galt.....
As a long term member (20yrs), I live in dread of the annual pre- duck season lets go shoot some clays to get ready group.
While the club ( with my full support) encourages clay sport shooting of all disciplines for all without reserve..... I do have issues with the safety manners and behavior of some of the folks who show up .BOTH MEMBERS AND NON !!!!!!
If I make comment to them about their safety habits, I am an a$$hole.... If I do not say anything, I am an idiot for being neglectful and allowing unsafe behavior. Lots of win here.......
I have found Galt to be an excellent club with friendly, helpful members, and I belong to all firearms related sections.
On the down side....... I resent the fact that I pay a fairly costly annual membership fee, and have to sit and wait to shoot, while non members who have no vested interest, jerk around and utilize the facility and shooting opportunities that my membership $ pay for.
Add in the unsafe acts (due to either ignorance or just stupidity), general dumb bass behavior and I cannot help but wonder if they are worth it.
On the up side......They are unfortunately the visible minority.
Also.... I was a beginner at one time, and remain grateful to those who were tolerant of me and willing to teach me the ropes... It should be like that, and still is in my experience at Galt.
I doubt that this experience is unique..... most clubs are like that.
Is Galt fun???? Hell yes..... bring your gun, and your sense of humor...... don't forget your manners or your safety behavior and it will be a great experience,

Sounds like I club I might enjoy....too bad it's way too far away for my needs! :)

It's 5 minutes away from me and the poor treatment I received when I went there to inquire about membership is the reason I drive 45 minutes away to my club. The Good Old Boys don't want anyone there, new members, non, nothing. It's not the first time this has come up. Anyone who lives in Cambridge knows this. It is too bad, because it is a large complex and indeed very nice. It's very expensive, because you pay for every thing you want to do, in addition to the membership fee - when I went it was around $300 a year just to get in the door, and that gets you nothing. You want rifle (you have to wait to be on "the list"), it's another approx $100 a year on top of membership. Want handgun? Tack on another hundred bucks a year. I suppose in the long run paying $600 bucks or so isn't too bad - you want to play, you have to pay, but they don't want you there.

I read these post with great disbelief. We got “better off without non members,” “I resent non members,”” and It will be a great experience,” all painted with the same brush.
I think I have changed my mind about trying Galt again. Think I will just make both of us happy and stay away.

Gentlemen
The discussion going on here is in the past.
I would be happy to take any one to this facility !
Give it a try all clubs change over the years that is why I started the thread!!!!
I have been member at Uxbridge,Oshawa & Orillia

What are your expectations when you visit a club as a non-member?

well I was shooting at our club last week and squaded up with six new shooters to show them the ropes, Our saftey rulles are inforced as they should be. I make a point to shake ever newcomers hand and welcome them. Try to help them out any way I can, we all share a common interest. I have not resetment towards non memebers at all they are just trying somewhere new. Thats the greatness of sporting clay.
I shoot somewhere every sunday, so i have had alot of clubs to compare it to. Like I said early last time i was at Gault was couple of years ago, and maybe things have changed. Our problems wwere not related to safety,
Anyway no hard feelings ,, enjoy your club , be safe

I spent four days shooting there during the World's this sumer and my impression of the members and the club are all positive. The shooters in the area are fortunate to have such a great place to shoot.

I wish I could attend the Gran Prix and Canadian Open in May.

Is it your club practice to require new shooters to be squaded with a member? That's not a bad way to go with new shooters or people who are new to the club. Galt requires anyone who hasn't shot in the bush to be accompanied by a member and I've taken people around several times.

I hope you give Galt another try at some point. Might have been an off day. They happen to the best of clubs.

not for me. I called there last spring, I was told that the indoor range is 22 rimfire only and there is a waiting list for rifle.
