Cowboy Action?

Would a new guy with only one gun be allowed to just shoot at the club level for awhile, or does everyone have to jump in with four guns right away?

Probably a very few minutes after you arrive at a Cowboy event and someone finds out you're short a gun or three you will be kitted out with more guns than you will know what to do with so bring lots of ammo. Even if your ammo doesn't fit the guns available, some ammo that does will miraculously appear I will bet.
The last shoot I worked, a couple of young ladies showed up "just to watch and see what it was about" Neither of them had any guns but within 15 minutes both were fully outfitted with guns and leather. By the end of the shoot their dad was on the phone to the store looking for guns of their own .LOL.

Probably the first time, maybe the second time you could get away with it, but if you kept coming back with the expectation of borrowing guns without making an effort to buy your own, I think the generous attitude of your fellow shooters might dissipate.

Most posses will help out a greenhorn for quite a while, knowing how much it can cost to get cowboy'd up.
My posse separates folks sharing, in the shooting order, to give them time to switch gear.
As for the best handgun to use in CAS, I lean towards the Rugers. Very robust and any I own have been trouble free, once sighted in properly for CAS distances.
Rifle and shotgun are a whole other discussion, with many points of view.
Best to read the SASS rules for the different classes to determine what class you want to shoot.
Welcome to the fun.

At first glance, it seems kind of expensive to get started in Cowboy Action compared to PPC or IPSC, where you can start with a stock handgun and stay there if you wish. Thing is, very few do, so by the time you get a race gun, and then a back up, you have spent way more than a basic Cowboy outfit. Looks like fun.

If folks that can't swing a 4 gun purchase are smart they will team up with a fellow newbie in the same boat and one guy buys two guns and the other the other two.

Swapping rigs is a PITA. So it's worth each buying one of the budget twin holster rigs from inexpensive sources such as Leathertown USA. Three of us are using LT rigs and they are holding up just fine. It was money well spent in my books.

Yah, that is a good idea. But I dont think there is alot of interest in my neck of the woods.

Once it gets started and receives a little publicity, you'd be surprised at the folks who will show up to see what it is all about.
In many cases, it's a non-threatening way of introducing folks to firearms. After all, who didn't watch cowboy movies a youngster!?
After shooting a stage or two with loaners, the satisfaction of hearing that "CLANG" when a bullet hits steel becomes addictive.
I shoot Classic Cowboy. I'm slow and will never finish near the top, but I don't have to. I'm having a lot of fun in a fantasy game.
Around here, steel targets, frames and shrouding etc. are often shared with other area posses for their matches; all part of the Cowboy Way.
Looking forward to hearing about your fun in CAS.
If you're around Ottawa, look us up and join us. We're at www.ovmcowboys.ca

CBR600 If you're in Newmarket as your avatar says, then you're only about half an hour from one of the best bunch of CAS shooters in Ontario. Crow & Ladysmith at the Barrie gun club run excellent matches twice a month throughout the year, (indoors in winter) and the SASS Central Canadian shoot in July. You can contact them through the BArrie Gun Club website

When I started CAS, I told a friend of mine about it. He tought it was cool, so we worked as a team. He got a 1st pair of revolvers, $1400.00, I got a rifle, Rossi Puma Model 92 $650.00, and a shotgun, Stoeger Coachgun supreme $650.00, we both got some good leather around $400.00 each. He got an inexpensive hat, boots and wore his own work shirt and a pair of work pants. I already had a pair of boots and a hat I had bought in Calgary a few years before as a souvenir. We then decided we wanted to reload we did the same thing. The rest of the gear comes later as you go.
We have a great bunch of guys and all are up for lending guns and leather.
I got a new shooter geraed up with a pair of revolvers and a set of holsters for $1000 right here on Gun nutz.
It pays to keep an eye out, plus if you're looking there is always somone looking to sell something.
Get in touch with us, come out and see what it's all about, it's the most fun you'll have with your clothes on!

I was about to say the same thing! I used to live in Barrie and work in Newmarket. I am driving further today than that, but have the honor of shooting with the Cold Lake Kid!

I had the pleasure of meeting some of the Barrie Posse last summer, and could not think of a nicer bunch to learn the sport from. Pay them a visit, you can't go wrong.

Don't forget to spend some time at the SASS website either.

Good luck, and have fun!
