Ruger SR1911 Fail to Feed

I took my new Ruger SR1911 to the range this weekend. I had a number of fail to feed's. After about 40-50 rounds the 7 round ruger mag cleared up and was working well but the 8 round ruger mag would always FTF on the last round. I was shooting 230gr UMC FMJ's. I am a complete rooky when it comes to the 1911. I did notice that the last round did not seem square in the magazine so I suspect the magazine but my Sig functions flawlessly so I don't have any experience with this sort of issue. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Other this this I love the gun. First shot at 20ft hit the target cross and I was immediately getting good groups out to 15 yards, the range maximum or I would have gone further.
 
Old school 1911 guys always said "give it 200 rounds of full power ball ammo before you try to do anything" good advice. Frankly after 50 rounds I'm not warmed up, never mind broken in, so give your new gun a chance.

I would try another ammo brand at first...

I agree with running the gun for at least the 200 round count to let the gun work itself in. One thing to check though would be that the magazine is applying adequate upward pressure on the last round. I have had a magazine follower hang up on the last round and cause a failure to feed.

Try some different magazines. Make sure your 1911 is properly lubed, they don't like to be run dry.
 
I don't believe the ammo is the issue, most likely the mags (Glock mags run great out of the box:p). Take care that the rounds are properly seated to the rear of the mag by tapping a loaded mag into/onto the palm of your hand. In order to diagnose the mags, borrow someone's mag that has been verified to have no issues and try that.

I'll also buy your Ruger mags at an extreme discount to alleviate any stresses in your life...you're welcome!? ;). Just PM me to make your troubles go away!:p
 
Sorry OP, i couldnt resist. Its a 1911 thing, i have purchased brand new 1911s and had similar issues. Its usually the mags, most are junk. You need to get your hands on some Wilson combat 47d, if you still have jams with those, then its the gun. Even during a break in period, i have not had that many jams, not until the gun got nice and dirty anyhow, which was around 300 rounds or so.

As well try loading that ruger mag thats giving you issues with 7 rounds, instead of the 8 it needs. The spring may just be too weak for 8. It happens. Why I am not a fan of 1911s, cause you have to buy aftermarket mags to make them reliable.
 
did you field strip it, clean it and lube it properly before you shot it first?

Mine has 2-300 down the pipe, and with two new shooters too, beside me. No problems at all, zero. And I am shooting bulk Norinco ammo
 
Probably a mag problem, in my brief history with 1911's I've learned they like a stiff mag spring that really pushes the rounds up. I haven't had any luck with the Wilson Combat mags, but I like the Kimber and Mec-Gar mags, they have worked flawlessly for me so far.
 
Thanks for all the replies and suggestions. Yes I did a thorough clean and lube before using. I also cleaned and lubed it after shooting. I tried the snap caps after cleaning and it seemed to be feeding better so hopefully it will be fine when I shoot it again. It came with labels on the mags which partially pealed off and gummed up the works a bit. Yes I know its a 1911 and yes I know they can take a while to break in and they can be a bit fussy. I bought because its a 1911 not in spite off. If I wanted a modern 45 I would go with a Sig or CZ. The buy a Glock comment not really helpful as I would use my Sig for 100% reliability.

I tried the 8 round mag with everywhere from 4 to 8 rounds. It was always the last round it hung up on. I will check the mag to make sure nothing is catching.
 
My Ruger SR1911 has been performing like a champ. I got it brand new, and I don't even think there was a break-in period. Both the Ruger 7-rd and 8-rd mags have worked just fine, and some cheap-ass surplus stamped steel mags have worked fine as well. I'm like 500 rounds in and I haven't had any failures that weren't related to user-error. Lent it to someone and they kept limp-wristing, caused a bunch of jams.
 
remington ammo in 45 auto is CRAP.... factory velocity is only 830FPS

here is a some test velocities out of a 5" 1911 of other ammo brands...

Black Hills 230 gr. FMJ; 850 fps.

Blazer 230 gr. FMJ; 845 fps

Buffalo Bore FMJ FP +P; 950 fps

Cor-Bon 230 gr. FMJ; 750 fps

Double Tap 230gr. FMJ; 960 fps

Federal American Eagle AE45A 230 gr. FMJ; 890 fps.

Hornady 230 gr. FMJ RN; 850 fps.

PMC 230 gr. FMJ; 830 fps.

Remington 230 gr. MC; 830 fps.

Speer TMJ RN; 845 fps.

Winchester 230 gr. FMJ FN: 910 fps.

Velocities measured at muzzle.
