Has anyone ever had luck getting an antique status letter for a Mosin Nagant with an antique dated receiver but a newer barrel?

I guess the benefits of it being antique are slight apart from it being much easier to take into the USA and not needing a PAL for posession.

I got my hands on a Finnish 1940 VKT barreled receiver, but the tang has a Tula hammer stamp and 93 as a year of production. There's also a barely visible AZF mark as it looks like the Finns ground out the Russian Imperial markings on top of the receiver, but the AZF (Austrian Capture) removes all doubt about its early production date.

It's not within the allowed parameters.
Under 8mm, centerfire, repeater & if memory serves me all 3 of those disqualify it from antique status.
But should I be in error, someone will surely chime in.

Turns out you are right. I did not realize there was a minimum caliber limit. My bad for making an assumption the law was the same for pistols and rifles. Thanks!

I just picked one up stamped 1938. what else do you look for more info/history on the rifle?

Wealth of info out there, every little stamp on it tells a story. Take some pictures, post them in the Red Rifles section and you'll get your answers. There are also dozens of web sites dedicated to information about these rifles history (google will help ;) ).

I'd still love to buy a pre-1898 Mosin, all the same.

Pre-1898 barreled ones are as rare as Hen's teeth. But receivers are more common - you are likely to find them on Finnish rifles - simply look under the tang for the date. ("Look under the cap to win" joke goes here ;) )

yeah its not antique just like what tokguy said now if it was a striped receiver turned into a single shot in a cal that has a minor bore diameter then .326 maybe

This has been tried. Refused to reclassify as an antique.
Wasn't a Mosin Nagant, it was a pre'98 Mauser with a steel plate welded in to close off the magazine well, but the principal is the same.

Wierd - I had a butchered Gew71/84 de-registered during the registry days - had the mag tube removed, all the lifting assembly gone and all the internals welded over/ground out. There was still a bit of a gap there but the stock was filled in and plate screwed down onto it.

You can search 7.62x54r.net for awesome info on the markings and how to decipher them. i just picked up a 1931 Izhevsk "hex" and found out that the additional MO stamping on it was special.. I guess... :D
