Bullet Puller Review - Kinetic Puller vs. Collet Puller

So I started reloading about a year ago, and when I started I asked for advise in regards to the type of equipment that I would need to have a full reloading set-up.

Everyone said that I should get a bullet puller, but no one was specific on what type to get. Wanting to get set-up for as little money as possible, I purchased a kinetic style puller. Now, this style of puller does work, but with a lot of frustration and time. Especially when you are attempting to pull a bullet with a canelur out of a factory crimped case.

Recently I was placing an order for some additional reloading gear for a new caliber of rifle that I am going to be reloading for and came across the RCBS collet style bullet puller and decided to order it. Man am I happy that I did! In a matter of about 2 minutes I had 14 bullets pulled out of factory crimped cases, a process that would have taken about 4 - 5 minutes per bullet with the kinetic style puller.

For anyone that is getting into reloading and wondering what style of puller to get, my recomendation would be to spend the couple extra dollars and get the collet style puller, it is WELL WORTH the extra money.
 
Yes, collet style hands down! I use a Hornady one. Although it doesn't get used all that often, when I do need it I am happy I bought it. I tried a kinetic style, too much energy was converted into sound though!
 
"...too much energy was converted into sound..." Operator failure. How well a kinetic works depends on what you're whacking it on. Rugs, carpets, wood and even concrete do not work worth beans. A nice medium sized rock(about the size of a human brain with one flatish side), you got for free, on the other hand, works like hot dam. All of which assumes that speed isn't a requirement.

I'm not sure, I have only used mine on .223 so far, but it easily pulled a 75gr. bullet out of a factory crimped case, as well as 55gr. Norinco rounds that FTF. I would have to guess that they will work great on any style round that you can get the collet attached to the flat sides of the bullet. If it is a round that only has curved edges showing it may not work as well.

Regardless of what you whack it on, the kinetic style pullers can't compare to collet style pullers. With the collet pullers that are mounted securely in your press it is as simple as pressing the bullet into the case is to remove one. It takes seconds and is done in one simple motion. Show me a kinetic puller that will drop a bullet out of a case with the first whack and I will eat my words.
 
I have a lyman kenetic puller I've pulled 7.62x39, 223 with factory crimps easily
it has to be hit on a hard surface obviously but I was lury of the plastic chipping so I
us the 1 " rubber mat on the cement floor in front of my garage work bench you have to hit hard and quick
eventually I wanna try the collet die but the kenetic works just fine it does what its supposed to do
its all in the way you hit with it

Collet = indoor plumbing

I felt like a retard trying to hump a football when using the kinetic , beating the hell out of everything in sight to get a bullet to pop out, wreck the tip and have powder all over hell.


When using the collet type you can go and re seat with no fuss mess or noise and is much quicker.It is like using a rock to pound nails vs a hammer.

Funny...yesterday I ordered both types.

My reasoning was that the RCBS collet could leave marks on some expensive LR bullets and changing their stability.

Maybe I'm wrong ?

Both have their advantages. The collet type is faster and easier if you have a lot of rounds or if they are military ammo. On the other time, it takes longer to set up. For just a few, the hammer is more convenient.

Nope I don't think your wrong. If you are not careful you can leave marks. I had an RCBS collet but sold it and got the Lyman which I find works better and leaves less marks - I think the collets are a bit better? I also have a kinetic puller and in the bottom of it I put part of a rubber earplug so the tip doesn't get damaged. I use both depending on what sort if ammo I'm pulling. If it's crimped then collet is much easier
 
I use the kinetic puller with a Lee shell holder. Slip the shell case into the holder, drop it into the puller, screw on the cap, bang till bullet is in the bottom, unscrew cap, dump everything into large tray, take out bullets, cases and dump powder into container. Done 100's, boring but fast.
 
I have the hammer tyoe that works just fine. I usually only need it if I switch bullets and forget to reset my micrometer seating die, so with one or two rounds it isn't a big deal. It would be a huge PITA to pull my seating die out out of the press and put the bullet puller in just to pull one bullet. However I did load up about 500 rounds one time that showed great promise at 100 yards, these didn't shoot worth crap at 1000 yards so they all had to be pulled. I borrowed a collet puller from my buddy for this job.
 
I think a bit of us preached the virtues of a collet puller for the press for rifle ammo. Nice clean pulls with no powder spillage. What's not to like?

Kinetic for pistol ammo and collet for rifle. Although I can pull some jacketed pistol bullets with a collet.

Most of the marks I've seen from using a collet puller have been below the neckline, which I take to mean the marks were from seating the bullet, not pulling it.

Biggest problem I've had with collet pullers is getting the damn bullet stuck in the collet.
 
I've had no problems with my kinetic "puller" but I don't need it often. My biggest complaint is it won't do the .50 cal I need to pull right now.

As to collet style pullers, I don't like the idea of needing different collets for different calibers and have been considering the Grip N Pull as a universal solution

a bit pricy but you spend the money once and don't have to buy anything else...ever.

Here's a little trick to avoid stuck bullets in the collet.

Gently lower the ram to extract the bullet. Once removed, gently raise the ram to JUST kiss the bullet and hold the ram at that point. Loosen the collet and lower the ram. Your bullet should just barely be sitting in the case which you can easily remove with almost no effort.
 
i use a lyman kinetic hammer.so far so good,i keep a flat rock Under my tool cabinet .nearly zero noise using this method,only thing i'm bored about is the case flying off across the room.other than that,i'm ok with that tool although i'd like something more effective and less time consuming. usually after 2 hits , the round splits .i use it rarely, i'm pretty meticulous with my reloads.
