So i got a good deal on a r700 5r millspec .223 on black friday. It got here friday and i did a function test yesterday and the first thing i noticed is the magazine holds 6 rounds and the ownera manual says its supposed to hold 5. The second thing i noticed is that the round feeding from the right side of the magazine( excludidng the last round in the mag) tend to pop out and get jammed under the chamber. Also the is a tiny ding on the crown that might not even be a problem.
Is it possible i did something wrong while reassembling it? Or is it defective and i should send it back. There really shouldn't be problems like this on a 1000$ gun.

the 223 based 700s hold more rounds than the 308/22-250 based 700s because of the smaller diameter (obviously?)
as for your feed have you tried to change the angle of the follower? sometimes they bent a little?

The number of rounds in the mag is academic but it may be the cause of your feeding issue. Drop the bottom plate and check that the two lips of the box are bent the same. The one on the right may be out of whack.

The ding on the crown is just cosmetic unless it protrudes into the bore. Unless the gun was "final sale" or "sold-as-is" I'd be looking at getting a different one just for the ding.

The way I check is to shine a light down the bore from the action end and put a bullet into the bore hand tight tight (don't force it at all) and see if you can see any light around where it contacts with the bore. You may see some at the rifling if your light is really bright and that is normal.

Thanks for the help guys. I think I found out what's wrong it seems the follower spring is to strong cuz when I unlatched the floor plate it would feed all six 90% of the time( which is better then 0%). Is there a way of making a spring weaker?

The likely issue is that there's too much tension in the new spring because you insist on trying to force feed the magazine (6) rounds when it's designed for (5). Barring that, simply compress the spring with a heavy rubber band over the long term to weaken it. In the end, if you need to have the spring replaced, it's not a big deal or expensive to do so.

Try this little trick. Instead of using the bolt handle to run the bolt forward, put your thumb on the back of the bolt shroud and push forward on that. You'll never have that off center issue again.

The thing I have found with my 700 converted to 300 BLK is that it doesn't feed well if I push the bolt slowly. It actually works 100% better if I run the bolt forward quickly.

Are you still running the .17FB spring and follower? I've noted some increased reliability in feeding when I switched it out for a .223 based one.

The magazine spring is always tight at first on most new rifles, it will loosen up over time with use. A little tip, if you want to get an extra round capacity, you can grind down the stand-off tabs on the underside of the follower (you'll see them when you pull the follower off). My AAC SD can be loaded with 5 as opposed to 4 rounds as a result now. Which for target shooting is great, 5 round groups without having to top feed that last round.

Ironically, most of my Rem 223's have had feeding issues for one reason or the other, all required different fixes. As for the dent in the crown, that seems to be current Rem QC.

Well I tried all I could think of and it still won't feed the fifth and the 3rd round in the mag. Fifth and 3rd as in 5 rounds and 3 rounds in the mag so it's not because I put to many in.

Is there any reasonably priced detachable magazine options that work well?

I was having similar issues with my 5R (.223) and found a little bending of the spring helped as well as running the bolt in a little faster. Still had the odd one that would kick up, but it was better.

I ended up getting a Choate stock and CDI bottom metal being installed at LGS as we speak.

Same here with Remmy .223 and .204's....I haven't had one that feeds well and reliably.
Slow cycling of the bolt makes it worse for sure..
They have fed very well once in a chassis due to center feeding from the mags (AI).
HS Precision BM fits the HS stock very well and the mags feed great....but a little expensive if you want some extra mags.
5R is a great rifle though..

I think it still has the original spring and follower. I figured they would be the same as the 223 version. I prob have those parts lying around so I could try them. Normally the only time I experience problems is with the first round when the mag is full. Generally after that the rifle feeds well.
