Ill be going to the us this winter. I was just curious, are there any guns that would pass as non restricted in Canada that we can't necessarily get our hands on here? Or is the usual 5 or 6 black rifles that are available here all that's non restricted and is reason why they are only ones here?

Any benefit to going to the us ??? Lol

You cannot buy any gun in the USA while you are down there if that's what you're asking. You also cannot export any firearm or controlled part from the USA without export permits. Enjoy your trip to the states, just don't bother buying anything gun related. You can look, you can even touch (they are happy to let you handle high end rifles, just ask), but you cannot export from the USA.

I printed off the forms from the rcmp website about importing a firearm into Canada. Why would we have these if we couldn't import? Are you saying Americans won't allow us to export them out? Or they won't sell me a gun?

Wouldn't you need to be an American citizen? And theres a waiting period as well which is different in every state I believe

Canadian laws are not the problem ;)

As has already been stated, you can not legally purchase (or take possession of) a firearm in the United States of America without being a U.S. Citizen.

If you attempt to 'export' a firearm from the United States without proper State Department export clearance you're looking at 10+ years in US prison, THEN they kick you out and ban you from entering again.

There's a reason that there are companies specially set up for importing guns from the US, and why it's not cheap to do.

Ah that's a better explanation. My next question was cant a American buy it. Then I import it. But you answered that as well.

Never mind. So same old Swiss, tavor, xcr.

Well, there's probably quite a bit to see down there that might not be on the shelves here. I you find what you like, you may even be able to go through the proper channels to purchase, export, and import it.

Prophet River Firearms do a lot of importing, however their website says it is "illegal" for them to bring in AR-15s. I'm not really sure what that's about.

IRunGuns is a major exporter/importer, and they do regular shipments between their warehouses on each side of the border.

So if you see something you really like, you can talk to IRG or somesuch to see if it can be brought in for you. Just keep in mind that there's a lot of guns that have separate Canadian and American versions. Carefully check each gun you're interested in, some of them might have a barrel a fraction of an inch too short, or have an accessory that falls under ITAR restrictions and cannot be exported. However, some items that fall under those restrictions have alternate versions that are very, very close to the original but with a few key differences so that they can be exported.

Also, be careful of having an American buy a gun for you. Many states have "strawman purchase" restrictions, and a person can get in very serious trouble if they are caught buying a gun for someone else. Even something as silly as buying a gun as a present for a relative can violate it. Doublecheck all regulations on both sides of the border, cover all your bases.

False, you don't need to be a citizen, just a resident (don't even have to be a permanent resident).

1st problem:
You're looking at the import laws into Canada. You're not in Canada when you buy a firearm in the USA.

2nd problem:
The USA has ITAR restrictions on arms exports. Federal crime, Leavenworth prison, bring vaseline...

3rd problem:
USA ATF forms and USA federal firearms license

But whatever do as you want, send us a post card from Kansas...

I recently purchased a Remington 1903A3 from a Gun Shop in Kennewick Wa. All the guy said I needed for the purchase was my operators licence (Drivers licence for those who live outside Alberta). I had the sales guy download Prophet River's import package off their website, the shop filled in their info, I mine, and off to prophet River's FFL dealer the rifle went. I filled in my additional info on Prophet River's website, received a confirmation reply that they would contact me when the rifle arrived at their shop. Five weeks later I get the call and I go get it. I don't know if all shops in the U.S. operate in the same manner as the shop in Kenniwick, but for me the transaction from start to finish was as painless as could be.

Yes Prophet River and Irunguns do this.

Purchase is different than take possession...

While you can't legally buy one and take possession, you could purchase it and ship it to an FFL that does export work (as mentioned above)

State requirements vary state to state, but all go thru NICS, unless its a private sale at a Gun Show.
- in VA there is no waiting period - but all store purchases run thru NICS and then in VA the State Police, doesn't matter if your LE and have a CWP.

You can bring firearms into Canada from the U.S. , just declare them , pay taxes and duty , show your PAL and you are good to go . The problem is on the U.S. side , you can buy many firearms at gun shows in the U.S. with no questions asked , the danger is being caught with the firearms in transport before you get to the Canadian border by U.S. Law Enforcement because it is illegal on the U. S. side to buy firearms.....pay your money and take your chances , many do it and never get caught.....but some do !

It shouldn't say 'illegal' to import a AR15. At one point, state department was rejecting any permits withe firearms on there marked 5.56 NATO No longer the case.

Whatever firearm you want to import needs to have a FRT as well… Something too exotic might not, and may wind up in RCMP gun jail for a prolonged period of time while they figure out you aren't trying to do anything hinkey...

I purchased a handgun from Buffalo Gun Centre. They gave me a package explaining the process. I did my paperwork. They did theirs. Met them at border and picked up. Paid duty. If the gun is legal to own in Canada (which you will find out when you talk to the government when filling out paperwork) yuo can bring it here.

Was this recent? Last few years? I remember they sent a rifle up in a taxi cab for a co-worker while we waited at the border. The cab driver followed us up the same afternoon. That was in the 90s. I didnt think they still did that for Canadian buyers.
