New to me 586 arrived :)

OK I know this revolver is no different than the thousands out there but I'm pretty stoked "mine" finally arrived.
It's a 586 no dash so I guess an early model and it came with the original box complete with warranty card, cleaning kit etc.
There is not a mark in this revolver anywhere and the blueing is gorgeous. Hate to even shoot it...well it's not that beautiful.
One thing I have found out is that there was an upgrade of sorts to do with the hammer etc and I don't think it was ever done on mine. According to many American site it's not
a big deal if it's done or not... let me know what you guys think







 
Great looking 586!

Concerning the "M" mod. A problem arose when some of the guns, no dash and -1's 586 & 686, were fired with Federal .357 ammo. The primers being softer than other brands, cratered more when struck by the hammer nose, and backed up into the hammer nose bushing, keeping the cylinder from turning when the gun was cocked either by double action or single action.

The modification included a new slightly shorter & smaller in diameter hammer nose, and a new hammer nose bushing with a smaller diameter hole for the hammer nose to pass through. After the mod was done and the gun was test fired, an M was stamped on the frame where it could be seen when the cylinder/yoke assy. was opened.

It doesn't matter if your gun doesn't have the mod. Unless you use a lot of Fed .357 ammo I wouldn't even care about it.
 
There should be a M stamped over the model code on the frame if the mods been done. The mod is actually to the hammer bushing in the frame.

Great revolvers the 586, gotta l like the bluing on the early versions. Mine's deep, and mirrorlike too.
 
Thanks for the info HC. That pretty well sums up the consensus on the US sites so I think I will leave it alone and just shoot it.
I was sure buying this 586 would solve my revolver needs but then I saw a nice model 28 highway patrolman.....Mmmmmmm

From what I understand the dash as in 586-1 to 586-8 signifies changes to the model throughout it's production. A no dash model would be the first production run starting in 1981 ...

586, 1981 Intro
586-1, 1986 Radius stud package, floating hand.
586-2, 1987 Change hammer nose and associated parts.
586-M, 1987 Product warning by S&W, M overstamp to indicate factory (mod for 586 and 586-1)
586-3, 1988 New yoke retention system. 1992 Delete 8 3/8" barrel and four-position front site. 1992 Delete nickel finish
586-4 1994 Drill and tap, synthetic grips, change rear site and extractor. 1995 Delete square butt. 1997 Delete 8 3/8" barrel, change to MIM thumb piece.
586-5, 1998 Change design to eliminate cylider stop stud. Change to MIM hammer with floating firing pin, change to MIM trigger, change internal lockworks.
586-7, 2006 Limited Edition. 7-shot variant only.
586-8, 2012 Reintroduced under Smith & Wesson's Classic lineup. 6-shot only.

You simply cannot solve revolver needs. It is an incurable disease.

Very good looking. Each time I see a 686, I say to myself that I prefer the stainless finish, but then I see a gorgeous 586 like yours and I am stunned by the beauty of the blueing. Can't determine which I prefer. Like the Betty and Veronica everlasting dilemma...

This brings back old memories! The 586 was my very first handgun purchase in 1985. Same 6 inch barrel as yours. Bought it new for $315 then. The problem with mine was it couldn't group worth a darn. Could have been me but I was a better shot with other guns so I think it was my particular gun. Sold it a year later. It is a beautiful firearm and still a classic. Thanks for posting the pics!
 
Congrats man. It's funny cause I just ordered mine today in 6". I'm going to wait about a month for it. Can't wait. Btw Very nice
