I have a 3x9x40 Vortex Crossfire on my Ruger American 30-06 and like it. Just Wondering if there would be a better scope in this price range for low light shooting?

I have the crossfire 4-12 on my 308, and It works just great in low light, enough to see 4 deer at 350 yrds 35 mins after sundown. Unfortuneatly technically past hunting hours so, they lived to become jerky another day.

The redfield scopes are decent and a little sturdier, I have heard nothing bad about them. Personally I would take a used bushnell elite over most of the newer scopes in the same price range, can't be beat for light transmission for $$$. Look for a firefly if you are shooting in dark areas (thick bush etc). You shine a small flashlight into the eye piece for a few minutes before low light, and the cross hairs glow. No batteries, no extra weight. I use them on my shotgun and crossbow. I would NOT use a crossfire scope in a hunting situation (or any situation I cared about), as I have had 2 shotgun models break the crosshairs on a ported slug gun. In my opinion you are only one bump away from losing your zero and missing an animal. I have seen the bushnell elites take abuse enough to dent them and still hold zero. Supposedly "They are recoil tested to 10,000 rounds of .375 H&H..."

Well we sure have different opinions because I would Not ever have a Bushnell enter my gun room. I yet own a Crossfire on my yote gun and damn well impressed with it for the money. The 4x12x50 allows lots of light at that first dark set in the morning.

All brands of scopes have good ones and bad ones. Shotguns are way over hard on scopes no matter what brand...

Yes - all brands have their upper and lower end lines. The crossfire is the line that Vortex has made in china. Vortex treated me well, the first crossfire I broke was a version 1, which they replaced with the newer model. When the second one broke I left it wrapped in the package and sold it. For the bushnells, the elite line is/was Bausch/lomb and is on a much higher level, most are made in Japan. The bushnells claim 95% light transmission, which puts them near the top of the heap. Their coatings also bead water, so they are clear when its raining (rainguard think). I cannot say enough good things about them, if you ever get the chance to check one out, don't sell yourself short.

On a side note - I didn't realize you used a crossfire on your rig. I thoroughly enjoy your calling posts and pics, thank you! I've shot a boat load of coyotes pushing/posting, but have yet to take one over the call. Last year was the first serious try, there were a couple misses, a couple that appeared before or after great light, and a few that hung back a long ways. I even hooked up with a buddy that had good success. He says I'm jinxed. I notice you call in heavy winds with some success. I try to play the wind, and usually try for less than 10mph. The first one that I drop to the call is getting mounted. Keep up the good work!

Well as far as taking abuse my gun dropped while leaning against a tree this past hunting season. I was setting up my blind, sat in my seat and went to reach over for my rifle and there it was on the ground. I shot a 4x4 buck at approx 130yds shortly after that. When I shot him he dropped where he stood. I have since retested the low light capabilities of this scope and it is fine. I would purchase another Crossfire. Was really wondering if a 50mm would do better in low light situations. Have heard that the higher mounting of a 50mm will throw off my cheek weld. Like alot of us hunters I am always looking to improve my odds in the short time we have in the bush.
