Thanks to my buddy Steve for pointing me onto this:

The L119 is a variant of the Colt Canada C8 CQB with a 10″ barrel and enlarged magwell. The rifles in the picture appear different from the L119A1 version. Either they are entirely new weapons (L119A2 or L119A3) or they are L119A1 carbines with an upgraded upper receiver. They are using Magpul magazines and ACOG 4x (TA31) scopes with Killflash tubes and a RMR red dot sight mounted on top.

The photos were recently published in the UK Ministry Of Defense’s Defense Focus magazine. They show British reservists serving in Afghanistan providing protection for senior diplomats and military officers. What is interesting is that they are carrying the elusive L119 carbine. This is the carbine said to be favored by British SAS and other special forces. All the previous photos I have seen of this gun “in the wild” have been low resolution images of special forces (with every face blurred or blacked out).

Apparently these bad boys use the "SFW" model number rather than the regular C8s. Anyone in England have access to a hard copy of this article?

Funny, the OPP (Ontario Provincial Police) carry similar, with a 30 rd clear mag, 10.5" bbl. No sling. Open sites.
Ammo looks like Federal PSP but i may be wrong.
Carbine mounts in centre of cruiser, with spare mag at the ready.
They tell me it gets "peoples attention".
 
Well one thing is for sure, whoever said that combat berets went out of fashion was surely mistaken! Unfortunately, can't say the same with regards to combat mustaches.

Anyway...nice rifles. However, the newer pictures lack mustaches and M1911's. 6/10 for the effort.
 
In 2007 we had some brits tag along on a convoy. The brit CP guys had 10.5". I didn't look closely and can't even remember what optic they had. As Boltgun said, it's nothing new.

CPD wants to get attention if they have to open fire. L119 is, for lack of a better phrase the catch all designation for type. There are 10.3"bbl, 12.5"bbl, 14.5"bbl and even a few 16"bbl examples floating around in UKSF & CPD/P&SS. DMR role is currently in the hands of the L129.

ACOG combos are purchased en-masss by the UK to equip their operational troops some years ago, so they are in the system already and cost no extra dough. It is like putting the 6X ACOG on the L129. They are not DMR sights but they were purchased for the MG and available in the system already.

Also, I am no super megaforce operator, but my guess is that if they get ambushed and put down by a fire team located at distance, a magnified sight will help to make effective returning fire. So it is not completely baseless to use such a setup.
 
Target identification and discrimination. It is all well and good to be able to hit targets on a range, but trying to figure out what needs (or does not need) to be shot in a crowded urban environment is of huge concern to all involved.
