NEW ITEM: Dominion Arms Socom 18

I love this rifle and certainly don't regret my purchase...However, it does have the index issue...
I wish he did, but it doesn't appear that Tactical Teacher has any clinics planned for Alberta...is there anyone in or around Calgary who has experience fixing index issues or can recommend a reliable gunsmith that knows what he's doing?

Thanks

I guess the fit on my Socom has some issues(?) Gas lock snugs tight a 6 o'clock. Has a small gap at the left bolt lug on an empty chamber, but with a loaded round (or case) both the left and right lugs are tight. Op rod handle is wigglier than on my shorty (my main concern - will be keeping an eye on this). Op rod guide is loose (easy fix /I don't care). I installed a fluted ORSG. Barrel index seems good and it zeroed up almost dead center on the FS. Have not checked the gas port alignment, but no FTE or FTF so far. All empty cases and primers looked fine.

doesn't sound like you have any real issues at all

Always keep in mind, these are really nice, fun to shoot....................$500 guns, not Springfield m1's!!!

Forget all the little imperfections and go shoot them!!!!!!!

In terms of cosmetics - there are some common issues than at first glance may be disconcerting for some. But it is not lost on me that this is a service rifle (BTW, I've read that SA M1 rifles can have the same issues...shhh!!). In terms of performance, so far no issues. For what it was designed to do, it does it better than I expected.

Those are entry level in the food chain and even with little imperfections those are a hell of a deal, you can buy 5 of those for the price of my SA NM M1A.... JP.

And the groups out of either rifle will even be the same. Heck of a deal.

No actually for having done the experiment a NM M1A will outshoot drasticly a Chinese M-14, we are not talking the same tolerances and thight grouping capabilities, even with alot of investment, i doubt you could bring a Socom or 305 the the NM level... Kind of normal... Imagine if i could get my hand on a M25 White Feather...Wow.... JP.

I'm off to the range again today, 3rd outing with the socom, at about 300 rounds now, today will make it over 400. The only thing I have really noticed on mine, is that the socoms front sight is not tall enough, so it shoots high even with the rear aperture totally bottomed out , though the gun shoots perfectly straight anyways, so its getting a scope, just wanted to send a fair amount of rounds down range first to make sure she is worth any upgrades.

So far, I noticed its nearly impossible to rack with the mag inserted (Maybe thats common for m305s? Doesnt really matter since I can just open the bolt and release it when the mag is inserted) And once while racking it, the bolt roller thing came off the grove in the op rod. Easily this gun worth the 500. Going to put some marks on the bolt lugs to see how snug its fitting.

Cheers.

Caramel - not arguing with your statement but I'm truly interested in what your National Match will shoot at 100. I'm curious how much I can expect out of my M305 and wonder if the NM will be a marker for the upper bound of what I might expect.

One difference is that you seem to primarily shoot commercial ammo rather than reloads and the second that you've been shooting iron sights, nevertheless I am curious.

I got tons of Norc ammo and it is a lot better than i expected, both my NM and my Socom are set the same way with the Casm genll scope mount, the weak link that destroy accuracy on the Socom is the op rod spring guide, in my testing the only improvement i did to the Socom is is changing it for a Black Arrow fluted spring guide, eventually i will reload for my NM and maybe for the Socom... Something is sure i have 600+ Norc ammo out of my NM and Socom and so far did not have one failure, ammo and rifles are reliables... JP.

Ideally you want 12-16 clicks or so from bottom on a 100 yard zero .The short barrel versions of these M-305 need a tall front sight post .

Really sorry for you :( Chinese $tuff $uck. no sense to build a rifle like this.

Sell it to caramel :) and your Socom will shoot like a charm.

If you give me a rifle with a crooked barrel, i wont be able to help you, you have to start with a relatively healthy rifle... JP.

Sorry, I meant its to short :D Completely bottomed out, it still shoots high , at 100 yards its a foot high, the front sight is brutal anyways, the post is ground on an angle and its canted to one side too(Very slight though, but all in all, giving the top of the post a 30 degree angle) And funny enough, the front sight post is fatter then that of my M305 long. I was going to replace the sights, but just going to get the casm mount anyways.

BUT, my groupings are fine and it shoots real smooth. I have no REAL complaints about it , it was exactly what I expected, my friend has a bit of older norc, its a lot smoother and the finish is nicer, especially the bolt funny enough, mine had black writing on it that I am noticing more and more and its starting to annoy me, but whatever, this a fungun, nothing more.

I put a XS sight systems Tritium sight set on my Shorty...

I just scoped mine.

ARMS 18, ARMS 22L rings and a Trijicon Accupoint in 1-4 power.

This brings the weight up to 12 lbs with an empty mag. It's manageable. But I wonder...

Is the USGI Synthetic stock lighter than the Norinco one?

I may snag one of those rubber butt pads and lose the cleaning kit. That's about a pound right there.
