Newbee question about carbine and shotgun shoots.

A huge part of the lack of attendance is due to the focus on handgun at the expense of other sporting implements. When the only way to get into the sport is by showing proficiency with a handgun, long gun shooters are gonna be incidental. The only way we can boost attendance is by accepting long gun shooters without requiring for them to branch out into other firearm types. Now, there is some conflicting info - some are saying that long gun only bb was approved at the regional level, while others are saying that it wasn't. I'd love to find out for sure either way.

It may have been approved but as of yet there is no course manual, no course description or any further information. Without direction from the NTO at this point it may have been approved to create a course but no course exists at this point.
IPSC has been and likely always will be a primarily handgun sport. Rifle, shotgun and others have been accepted but they are not the main focus. Our rule book is primarily handgun oriented because that is how the sport started. It was a defensive handgun sport. We don't focus on handgun at the expense of other firearms, the other firearms come at the expense of handgun shooting. FWIW if you are going to be serious about Rifle and shot gun you are going to need to shoot an AR, which is restricted, if you have your Rpal then go buy yourself a Glock or M&P and get your BB and you are all set for multigun.

I think that's internet speak for "I want something and I have to convince people the world will end if I don't get it"

As an example, a 25 slot shotgun match at Wentworth didn't even fill on the online signup (Everyone that went told me they had a great time) but a pistol match held on the same day would have probably put 60+ slots on the calendar for pistol shooters and not only filled but likely 40-50 people on the wait list.

What's your point here? Are you saying we should stop it and do what you wanted instead?

I don't mean to sound negative about shooting rifle and shotgun because I like them too. However until we can get to a point where we are having enough pistol matches and slots at pistol matches to satisfy our current demand I don't see giving up range time to something that is not as popular.

Doing the same thing over and over again will not make any changes in the sport and for sure won't help the sport survive.
Personally I find this argument about ranges ridiculous and narrow thinking. The whole handgun-only situation in IPSC Canada is created artificially and if you really wanted to run matches, you can surely find time at other ranges, there are more than enough around. Team Hoser folks proved that. Not to mention that there are more shotgun ranges around GTA than handgun ones.

Could set up a red neck biathalon
Skidoo, shoot, Snowshoe, Shoot, ride a moose, shoot.
Actually, I would be so down for that.

It really is worth it to get your restricted, opens alot of doors and does not have to be all $$$$$

Why worry about "eating dust"?
IMHO shooting a rifle at less than 50 yards is a waste of ammo.... Its a "rifle". You need space to really see what it can do. We don’t have enough space.
and if we did have space... IPSC would have to also see its way clear to accepting new/different targetry. Paper would be out.
Self setting steel would have to be used. This may not sit well with the hard core IPSC range lawyers.

FYI the latest IPSC rifle rules allow self-indicating/self-resetting targets. The problem is that they have to be of one of the approved shapes, so commonly available self-resetting targets like MGM AutoPoppers, which are legal in USPSA, are not allowed in regular IPSC.

MGM flash targets are legal, if expensive.

Just trying to make the point that without auto reset targets a stage of any real distance will be impractical/slow to score...
I mean really... Can you imagine having to traverse hundreds of yards for each shooter to check the target (s)..? LOL.

Max range on steel for Team Hoser matches was 100 yards.. Without self setting or reactive steel we wouldn't have bothered.

I agree 100%.
