A friend is threatening to give me a rifle chambered in 280 Remington. He hasn't let on what kind of rifle it might be yet.

What would you do?

I have enough big game rifles and don't see much difference between a 280 and my 270 except that I can get 270 ammo anywhere if I need to.

I had a 270, and 30-06.
Sold the 270 and gave the 30-06 to my son.
There is only .007" difference between the 270 and 280.
Still have the 25-06 and 280.
They are all family.
Never look a gift horse in the mouth - even a really old one makes good coyote bait!

you do realize that if you refuse this gift of rifledom superiority you may lose a friend as well as miss out on being the coolest guy in your neck of the intraweb.....

I hear from reading these pages that the 280 Rem is only surpassed in the "cool" department by the...........................280 Ackley...:)

Well the reason he thought of me was that we were talking about rifles and calibres one day and I said that there was a time in my life that I really really wanted a 280 Remington.

I had been told as a child about the marvelous 280 Ross and then about 45 years ago I read about the 280 Remington and it just seemed like the perfect "do everything" rifle to me.

IMHO, the 280 Remington is a great cartridge, overshadowed by the .270, I have an ADL in the 80's I swapped with a taxidermist for him to do my bear rug and he also gave me 200.00 along with it. I remember the old advertisement, flatter than the 30/06 and hits harder than the .270.

.280 is an excellent cartridge... About as excellent as 7X57, 7mm-08, .308 and .30/06... Excellent.

I built a switch barrel rifle, with a 280 Remington barrel. I love it! Recoils Very mild, has waaay more quality, High BC bullets available than the 270 win. It just seems more practical for reloading variety/potential.

I Like the 270 as well, dont get me wrong.

Here is some targets I shot a couple weeks ago.

She shoots just fine for me! Check out the group size measurement on the bottom group! I laughed when my calculater spat that out! A 280rem shooting a .284/7mm group! I can gardly wait to stretch her out to 1760 yards! I will take my time though. No sense in rushing the fun and end goal! If I finish my goal to soon, I will just want to do something else! Lol!

Hope you like the pics!

Where oh where do you find these giving away rifle friends?
All I get is sheet and abuse.

Some folks, by their very nature, attract magnanimus gifts from those around them...

Other folks, by their very nature, attract "sheet and abuse" from those around them...

Great groups and shows potential for sure. The issue is your spread in velocity. At 1760 you'll be stringing a disgusting amount with 60fps spreads.

You'll see it at 600 even.

Yup! My thoughts exactly!
This is the fifth and sixth groups from this barrel. So she is a new work in Progress.

I am still fire forming my brass, and getting an idea of what the rifle likes yet.
I just went through some issues with brass. Got that figured out now.

I am no stranger to long range shooting, done lots of that, and I hope to get my SD down into the single digits.

Lots of shooting and reloading experimentation to be done! I can hardly wait!!! Lol!

you will cover a lot of ground with a 280 and loading there is no end. a 280 and a 375 h&h you will do everything why do they make all them others ???

Lol! My "long range"plan (pun intended) is to get the 280rem, 30-06, 270win, & 25-06 barrels out to a mile on one single platform. Just to see if I can do it.

I will even get a 35 whelan barrel for this rifle.

For now the 280 demington is captivating my attention for sure

There are two types of people, those that give and those that take.
I have given more than I have received..........sheeeeet included.

Oh, no homo.
