Finally treated myself to a new toy after a long time.

I don't shoot my M44 much as it has a brand new mint bore. They're becoming more rare these days, so I wanted a Mosin I could shoot and abuse and not feel guilty about.

Went to the local gas station/gun shop/### toy shop/tobacco stand (true story!) they had one 91/30.

It was an Izzy 1937 in very good shape. Stock had a well done solid repair near the very tip but other than that the receiver was very cleanly machined finish was mint, bolt was brand new condition, cleanly machined. The bolt, magazine/trigger group match as well.

The bore looked very strong though, that's all I was looking for really in the first place. It was hard to tell as there was still cosmoline in it, but the crown was mint and shiny, the barrel exposed had no wear on it at all.

Got her home and took her apart, cleaned the bore for a few hours, she was more than good, it was mirror finish brand new rifling was razor sharp and cleane! I've never seen a standard $169 Mosin with a bore like this.

Looking over it I found these markings just ahead of the rear sight base/receiver:

Never seen any marks on a Mosin like that, they are cleanly and sharply engraved into the steel of the barrel. This would technically be my 5th Mosin to pass through my ownership. I researched all the marks on every one I had but never have I seen this. Are they newly made barrels just slapped on the old receivers before export?

What is this? Or is this normal for recent imports?

I had the same sort of wtf reaction to my first milsurp - a Chilean Mauser with the import markings on the underside at the muzzle. ;)

What a pity that the Americans cannot have their rifles tattooed where it doesn't show, like we can. My M44 has the big fugly dot matrix engraving on the receiver.

Ah seen.

Thanks all. Never seen these marks on a Mosin before.

So I guess I just lucked out with a mint bore on this bad motherf**ker

Can't wait to heat her up! The front post is nice and high too, so I should be able to file it down to POI and get the sights actually calibrated.

Thanks for the knowledge folks!

My 1936 RC Kar98k has the dot matrix CIA import marking on the barrel near the muzzle. Hard to see without some light shining on it but not as terrible as some of the import markings I have seen on the receivers.

When you're hot, you're hot. Go buy a lottery ticket: you're hot right now!

Very nice.

"Hunting Carbine", yes. Just doesn't say for hunting WHAT.

In Italy all the weapons imported in our country since the 1975 must have markings like those and must be proofed by one of the CIP Prof Houses or the Italian only Proof House in Gardone Val Trompia before to be sold to the public :)
