if you want 5.45x39 to work in 5.56 pmags reliably you take the follower out and take off the front anti tilt part of the follower.

You're right. But 5.45 isn't significantly different from .223, performance wise. Without something to differentiate it from .223, it seems somewhat pointless.

That said, if we didn't face the Canadian price penalty for new production 5.45 (available in the US for under $0.30 a round), or had surplus 5.45 available for under $0.20 a round, I'd be all over one of these uppers.

Yes, my hope is we see some of the surplus 5.45 close to US pricing.

I wouldn't say it's a novelty, there are lots of people who don't shoot surplus 7.62x39 through their rifles, they go with the hornady or the MFS etc. It boils down to what each person wants or needs this caliber for.

I agree with this 100%. This caliber would be awesome to have here in Canada if we could get a CZ chambered for it.

Let's get down to brass tacks.
Can anyone else bring in surplus 5.45x39mm and how much would it cost in Canada?
I already had an XCR-L in 5.56mm. It was a good rifle.
I've shot 5.45mm in an AK74 and it's about the exact same as 5.56mm. At least there is no real tangible difference at all.

What is the point of having a 5.45mm Soviet caliber unless it's cheaper than readily available/common bulk non corrosive .223 Rem? If you can't get surplus 5.45mm for drastically less than $0.40 a round there is literally no point in this whole thing. Especially if we can't own AK74's.

I beleive it would/ should be about the same as 7.62x39
so yes cheaper than 5.56
HoweverI have no idea if that price would stay that away after import expense
