The question for anyone that's done this is...

Is the Krylon khaki too dark as a base coat? I was thinking khaki, with some olive to break it up.

Krylon is crap for guns but at least its cheap and comes off easily. Their khaki is a very light tan, much lighter than FDE. Its an almost perfect match to Fab Defense tan.

You can spend the extra and Cerakote it. From all the vids and reviews I've seen on Cerakote, that's one tough finish!

I agree on Cerakote, that's the way to go IMO, If I do a scratch build a cerakote treatment would definitely be on the list. There's a guy near me that does it too, maybe there's someone close to you that could give you a quote.

Don't be shy about using the krylon, it's cheap to use, easy to touch up if needed or wanted and the add bonus that any wear or scratches give the rifle charter and the look of battle.lol

I used Krylon on my Norc. Used the olive green as a base then khaki and brown to break it up, just some simple stripes and blotches like you would do hastily in the field. As has been said already, the khaki is actually quite a light tan colour, not dark at all. Krylon is cheap and very easy to change up if you want to, but it will wear off in the high contact areas. I like it, gives the gun a real "battleworn" kinda look. Have had several people complement me on the range too!

That's one way to get the broken pattern using the cardboard, I saw one where the guy used leaves from trees, shrubs and ferns. It made some cool patterns.

This is a gun i'm going to play with, and i like the non-permanence of the krylon. I'll probably end up painting it a few times just to try out different patterns.

As for cerakote, i'm thinking of doing the 1911.

I kinda like the way that guy did the green. 1 hard edge, feathered on the other edge. I might have to try that.

The reason people say krylon is crap is because they don't clear coat it afterwards.

Trow a layer of mat clear on it and call it day, it will last and wear well.

Fit and finish on the Cerakote product line is the best stuff on the market bare none.

Will a top coat of clear matte hinder paint removal if i decide to strip it and start over?

(The krylon thing is to see how I like various patterns before i cerakote a nice AR)

Also OP for the base coat you want to use the lightest color you will be using. If you use a darker one it will change the color of lighter colors put on top of it.

I also agree that cerakote is a better product, but to be honest is not really cost effective for our use. And krylon is just simply easier to use.

I did this with krylon camo. Khaki base base with some light squirts of olive. The color of the final product differs from the finish and color on the cap of the can.
