Im sure there are many posts in the forums that have this answer, but I kind of lack time to scour the boards for info. I have set up my reloading station, and have acquired 500 pieces of .308 brass (thanks "the tooner") and now its time to really sink into the first stage of my project. Reload for long range. Now, Im on the market for a .308 rifle.

I have looked at Remington, Savage, Browning, Sig etc etc. Tonnes of nice stuff. I do like the long range tactical look, ya know, the McMillan style stocks, fluted barrels and so on, they just look bad ass. I guess my price range would be the $800 to $1500 mark rifle only. I love the SSG 3000 but I think ill have a hard time finding one for $1500 including taxes and shipping, after all said and done.

Id like opinions, thought, ideas. I know these boards are full of them. Id like to hear from those with the knowledge. I have been away from guns for a long long time due to my travels, and I have finally come back home and need to rekindle my fun childhood sniping skills.

Thanks all

J

Under 1500? Try used on the ee. If new you may want to look at a remington 700 xcr tlr. Very good at your price range and is also a contender for upgrages. I recomend the atlasworx bottom metal first. Also if your not into a project gun look at the savage sr. (Model 10 I think)

Get the Savage FTR and call it a day.

A guy won Ontario Provincial Championship for FTR with one. What else needs to be said?

Last summer I bought a CZ 550 Varmint for about $950. It's ready to go with a full floater, match trigger and a nice stock. Only down side is CZ specific rings. If you are going to get a +MOA scope mount you can have one built for the CZ by ATRS. I am going with a NF scope and a 20MOA rail/rings for this year, should set me back about 3K all in.

You, like many of us will likely catch the "precision" bug. With that in mind I would suggest you give some consideration to aftermarket availability such as how easy it would be to install a match barrel, perhaps trigger upgrades, stock upgrades etc.

I also strongy suggest taking the time to browse the EE. Great rifles can be had at substantial discounts and likely with parts that can be difficult to source. Lots of guys build very respectable rifles on here only to get bored with them and then sell then to move onto other projects or to get funds for upgrades.

Just a suggestion....I have a new model Winchester Stealth that is incredibly accurate for a factory rifle.
I've never changed a thing or modified it in any way and it's a shooter.
Obviously I may have got one on the good end of spec. but there's always that risk with any factory rifle.

I like it so much, I still shoot it as much as my custom rigs.

I also noticed that IRUNGUNS has one on their US site.

Here is a well written article that should help you narrow down your choices of equipment: http://www.shootingvoodoo.com/index.php/articles/starting_out_in_tactical_precision_rifle_shootin/

Yup.... Go with the Savages for the money. I have a Model 12 Long Range Precision in 6.5 Creedmoor. Amazing out of box. I know you're looking for .308 so check out the other 12's. F/TR or Benchrest. Several other models are very good as well. The Law Enforcement series has similiar capabilities, as long as you like black. If you have a LEO buddy, the 10 TR deal Frontier has going on is a very nice rifle for the price, with a threaded barrel for a muzzle brake if you want one. I shoot Savages because they are the only thing that keeps up to my Blaser in my mind.... And that ain't easy.... Especially for 1/4 of the price. That 10 TR deal, if you can get ahold of it also leaves you with a pile of extra coin so you can up your scope game.... And until you get really serious, a better scope is better than a really good rifle.

If I had up to $1200 for a .308 precision rifle no glass included I'd go for a Savage 10 FCP($879 at Cabelas)... like yesterday.

If you love the SIG, save up for the taxes and shipping and get the SIG. Don't compromise, life is too short.
I had to save up major coin to afford the rifle I wanted and it was well worth the wait.

Save up for the dream rifle, if you have the patience for it.

Its excruciating to wait that long, but so ubelievably worth the wait! It doesnt matter what your dream rifle is. Just save for it, and get it! Its all about focus and determination.

But it is HARD!

Savage 10 FCP or the HS will be less than $1500.
Shilen now makes Savage barrels so you have the ability to eventually re-barrel, if needed, with select match grade barrels.
Remington 700 would give you the most versatility for aftermarket stocks.
But I am also inclined to advise getting the rifle that YOU really want, regardless of cost (within reason).
I'm eagerly awaiting my Savage 10TR which is basically the FCP with a longer barrel.
Is it "the best .308"? Likely not. But it is a heavy barrel with 5R rifling for $600. Sorry, but this deal is for military/LE only. It's the best rifle for me in my situation.
If you're shooting 1000 yards, the best rifle will be the one with the person behind the trigger who can most accurately judge the wind.

If a shooter with a rifle that's accurate to 1moa can judge the wind within 1mph, he will be more accurate than if he had a 1/2moa rifle and misjudged the wind by 2mph.

Or he can just wait for a while until Caramel gets tired of his and buy it off of the EE for a good savings... :p

Given a choice, I think everyone would get the most precise rifle available. Just remember that accuracy depends on a lot more than just the inherent precision of the rifle!
