Reversing safety switch on 870, whats involved?

Would like to reverse the safety switch on my 870, as I'm left handed and tend to knock the safety on under recoil. Is there somewhere I can order a new part for or should I take it to a Gunsmith to do, if it can be done?
 
I do not know if a 870 safety is reversible, or if a new left hand safety would be needed.
However, if you remove the trigger mechanism, you will notice a little pin, which retains a spring, which drives the detent ball that causes the safety to click. Remove the pin, and the detent spring, detent and safety can be removed. Do not do this over a shag rug.
 
Uncle Mikes used to make a replacement LH safety button. I have one in my 870. I don't I don't know if it is still available. I was a simple change.

I'm a left hand shooter and I've never done what you are speaking of, but this does come to mind.

I changed mine to left handed. You need a pin vise. (Small pen like drill)
You have to drill a new hole for the spring and ball. It's currently just to the right of the center line on the trigger housing.
You drill it a new hole on the left side about 1/4 lower as to not run into the factory hole. It's an easy fix. I can post pics of what i did when I'm at home I'm on iphone at the moment.

I've done this before as well.
 
If you are hitting the safety button when you shoot (either right or left-handed), you are definitely doing it wrong.
 
I've got a 870 here that was converted to left hand safety, I switched it back.

There was once a school of thought that left handed people were in league with the devil. They seem to deny it now, but what would you expect the left handed spawn of Satan to do, admit it?:stirthepot2:
 
For the safety conversion requested by the OP check out...Fortmanns left hand safety conversion for Remington 870. About $20 for parts and 1/2 hour or less to install.

If you have control over the firearm, a proper grip and correct contact with the trigger, yes it is.

Recoil pushes the gun back, not laterally.

Anyhow, accidentally activating a safety is better than accidentally switching it off.

If one must get a left-handed safety, it's better to replace the whole trigger group or have a gunsmith alter it than bubba-ing it. Unless you expect to be under fire, the safety is the single most important component.
