I love my K98 in 7.62! It is more accurate that I could have hoped for with the old iron sights! Sadly she had a problem. Someone rammed something hard into the breach and caused some nasty scaring (took some chips out) right where the shoulder of the rounds sit. Because of this, once you fire a round, the bolt is hard to open because the brass if fire formed into this scarring.

The only gunsmith in town is about 3 or 4 weeks behind in his work though and isn't sure he'll be able to fix the problem. It's hard to see but it will be on the left hand side:

Here's hoping it can be repaired but I won't be getting my old battle rifle back anytime during this year for sure :-(

That's a shame. Maybe it would have to have the barrel turned back one thread and then the chamber recut? Not sure exactly what could be done about that.

Good luck. Hopefully he'll be able to repair it without replacing the barrel.

He'll have to put in a finish reamer and give it a scrape. It ma or may not clean up before excessive headspace results. You might be into a new barrel though.

In which case the rifle gets turned into parts as its not worth the cost of a new barrel and the work

I'm curious to know what the brass looks like after being shot in that thing. It would give a better idea of the damage.

Where the neck meets the "shoulder" there is scarring and an indent. Worse when the round is fired. Hard to open the bolt (because brass is fire forms into the damage)

Damn, that really does suck! I just got an Israeli K98 from weimarjack, shoots amazing. Barrel is like new inside. I doubt these saw a lot of rounds down the pipe.

That's what really hurts with mine, it shoots REALLY nicely! Nicer than I can with iron sights, thus wanting to turn it onto a sniper rifle knock off.

A real shame drache! I wonder what can be done. Of course, another option is finding a donor Chileno Modelo 1912-61 and/or barrel from one to use on yours. Trade Ex has some, who knows, Anthony may have a beat up one with an excellent barrel you can buy less than retail as all you're really looking for is the barrel. Especially given the bolt face is set up for .308 now.

I have taken mine out, it likes my 168 gr. Hornady March HPBT with 42 gr of H4895 load.
