I've recently purchased a Socom M14 from canam and have been Trolling for a seminar within an hour or so of Ottawa and don't seem to be having any luck. The rifle is in half decent shape and only needs a little tweak to the indexing and a once over from someone who has half a clue of what he is looking at. Does anyone have a suggestion who could fit the bill in or around Ottawa.

Jason Gunco on Colonade Rd is likely the best Gunsmith in town. They say he is not much on personality, so don't expect a lot of chit chat, but he is supposed to be good. Other than that, I don't personally know anyone in town that owns one that could help you.

I live down in Long Sault. If you have a car and some time over the holidays, you're more than welcome to come down for a visit, and I can show you what you need to do to tune up your rig.

There's no debate on the issue. Jason was trained by a german master-gunsmith and is possibly one of the best smiths in Canada, not just Ottawa. He has no front office staff, so you should be glad he's abrupt and brief, or his backlog would get silly.

And yes, he's quite familiar with the M14 platfirm - I've worked with him on them before and can confirm this.

He can also build fine custom rifles that would make it into gun rags as showcase pieces if we were in the US. He does sub-contract engraving, but the guy he contracts to makes the money printing plates for the mint. He really has no equal.

Just cause I like road trips, I took a day trip to Collingwood and back from Ottawa to have Hungry/Tactical Teacher teach me step-by-step on how to assemble my M-14. Well worth the trip!

I can second the fact that Jason is top shelf when it comes to all types of gunsmith work. He has done AAA+++ work on many of my guns, from repairing a fine English side-by-side, welding a broken Arisaka firing pin to fixing a big .58 M1861 Springfield. Never had an issue with his bedside manners either, but that's probably because our Vizslas (Hungarian Pointers) were related. He offers a fairly quick turn-around as well.
