With that kind of gear, I wonder how much (or how little I guess is more correct) the skill of the shooter affects the results.
 
well i suppose it is really not for me hehhe.. I think reloading and adjusting to the wind etc is a bit of a skill. Well beyond my capability.
 
Money replacing skill. I'm not a distance shooter, but even that offends me on some level, that just takes all the need for practice and work out of shooting, it's like instead of finding what position works best for you by trial and error, you just buy a calculator. What is the practical application for this?

I'm with you on that. In any case, I've seen better groups than the ones showed in the video shot by rifles that are still, well, rifles... :cool:
 
rails are not as easy to shoot as you might think (they do shoot small groups),but they require good bench manners and they also need to be properly set up and tuned just like any rifle, all the normal principles of bench shooting apply , and then some.
as for practicality , a rail is one of the best ways to test any component, be it bullets ,brass prep, powder, primers, actions and especially scopes , A rail can separate the good from the great and also the bad very quickly.
if you ever get the chance to sit behind one and shoot it make sure to give it a try you will probably like it for sure

I wouldn't say this is no longer shooting , nor is money replacing skill .. This style of shooting is purely bassed off load development. And wind reading ability .

As far as practical application . Why does that matter ? They are shooting and supporting firearms rights . Isn't that good enough for you ?
 
The point of equipment like this is to make the equipment as reliable and repeatable as possible. Then it becomes a wind reading contest and the best skills win - its not just the best gun anymore because they're all pretty close to the same (the firearms that is).
It's only really telling to shoot these in a competition when others are using the same equipment - then the wind reading competition starts.
 
thanks guys for putting in your thoughts. It makes it all that much better to see what opinions on this are. I dont think this would be for me but as far as testing of things.. especially ammo etc it is a cool sport to try. I still believe in on the dirt shooting sports with regular rifle.. hehehe
 
We shoot the unlimited class every year at the Rosebud range west of Calgary. Probably 5-6 rails out here now.

It is as close to a pure wind reading contest as you will find anywhere. If you think the wind is worth 1-2 bullet holes of drift, pull the trigger and find out, or try and out wait the wind, keeping in mind you have 12 minutes to shoot a 10 shot group. It is a very simple concept, but very difficult to execute perfectly.
 
I had the opportunity to attend a bench rest seminar that Rpollock put on a couple of years ago.

It was an awesome learning experience. I thought the guys who were instructing us were very meticulous. Takes a certain type of person, patience to put the time into that kind of shooting. If you want to be a precision shooter, there is allot to learn from this seminar.

I have never seen any shooting sport on this forum bashed like Bench Rest does. I have yet to see a Bench Rest shooter bash the IPSC guys, tactical, shotgunners, F-Class, run and gunners. We may not be fans of your disciplines but leave well enough alone.

What I can say is which of these groups of shooters wreak the most havoc at ranges or just shooting out on crown land?

Yes we are meticulous, and anal when it comes to our equipment, bench manners or even reloading. Most that try it and then leave say it is to anal for them. We will continue to shoot sub 250 aggs while the rest try to follow a long way behind.

Just one BR Shooters opinion.
