Can I cut my Remington 700 SPS .300 Win Mag barrel to 22 inch ? (1:10 twist)

kk OP dont let these guys screw with you.

What half of u dont seem to realize is the American military's new sniper rifle is a .300 wm Remington with a 22 inch barrel (XM-2010). If the latest in military weaponry isnt good enough for you then nothing will be. Btw you guys are probably the same ppl who grab 30 inch barrels on ur rifles.
OP cut the barrel to 22 inches bro you will do fine with it and it will be alot more useful and comfortable in the field that what these guys are suggesting.

love the way you think bud... thanks

with loading today you will be just fine it is all about the game make it what you want . I cut and crown a lot off barrels and hate iron sights

First off, no one is "screwing" with the OP. He asked a legitimate question, and we are try to help. Just cause the U.S.A does something, well then, that's the end of it I guess. Guess what, the U.S.A snipers are gonna be spitting out unburnt powder out the end of their barrels too. If 20 or 22 inches was a proper length for magnum chamberings, every manufacturer would put one on their gun. Unless he reloads, this will be the case. Plus that's a lot of powder to consume in a short barrel. Muzzle blast will be more. Sell the thing before you make it into an inefficient rifle. Or trade it for a WSM that easily uses 20 or 22" of barrel much more efficiently.
But thanks for being the hero and all. Nice to see how well you know us all. "you guys are probably the same ppl..............blah blah", man nothing better than a know nothing thinking he knows all.

The XM-2010 sniper rifle has a 24" 1-10 bbl.

"...the velocity loss is not even an issue..." It is and it isn't. You'll lose about 100 FPS per inch, depending on who you listen to. However, the only real disadvantage is the increase in muzzle blast and flash. And with a 22" barrel, that's not horrible. Just don't use a hack saw. Don't even think about a hack saw.
"...thought you couldn't cut barrels..." That only applies to barrels that will become something other than non-restricted after being cut. Doesn't apply to S1nnerman's SPS. A Rem 700 .300 Win Mag likely has a 26" on it now.

yup, at 22'' it would be well above the limit imposed by our smart and very knowledgeable politicians ;)

just got this info from another forum, here's exactly what the guy wrote ''copy/paste'' ..........

This myth about magnum rifles needing 26" or longer barrels is just that - a myth perpetrated by slick writers who didn't have access to chronographs. Today we know better. From Rifleshootersmag, Sept/Oct 2003, .300 Win Mag, 180-grain bullets and RL-22 powder:

Barrel..Velocity
27".......3055 fps
26".......3031
25".......3024
24".......3003
23".......2984
22".......2960

So even cutting 5" off the same barrel lost just 95 fps - no one would ever notice such a difference in the field, ever.

First question, to the O.P 1) Do you reload your own ammo? Or shoot factory stuff? That Data ^^^^^ is only good in the rifle it was shot out of. Every rifle is different. Put that same ammo in 5 different rifles , and you'll have 5 different speeds. Plus, Where did you get that fluff about slick writers and no chrono's? I've subscribed to 4 different gun mags for as long as I have been able to read. (almost every writer has access to chrono's, and much nicer ones than we have. And they have had Oehler's to boot. ) That whole sentence with the "slick writers" sound contrived. I've also seen several other "lose an inch at a time" comparisons and the velocity loss was significant. The powders aren't magical. They still need physical space to burn, and unless you want to use really fast powder (and risk blowing your face up with a pressure spike using unsuitable powder) ,without that extra 2", POWDER IS GOING TO BE SPIT OUT THE END OF THE BARREL................UNBURNED. No one needs a 26" barrel, but 24" is generally the length needed. period.

I do reload for my handguns and for my 45-70 but never did for another rifle. I will reload for the 300WM. Don't forget that I did not write that text and I think I will start with 24'' and see how it goes. I will also shoot it with a chrono with the 26'' barrel and then do the same with the 24''.

as long as the powder is burned the job:stirthepot2 is done It is going to be 2014 move up in time

One thing to consider is that the bore may not be concentric with the outside of the barrel. Some bores are banana shaped. Actually, a lot of them are. The bore may be concentric with the barrel at the chamber and muzzle, but not in the middle. When you cut the barrel off, you may find the muzzle is now off center.

This is easy to see after the barrel is removed, if you have a spinner so you can rotate the barrel and look though the bore. Many barrels look like skipping ropes inside.
