December 6th first muzzloader deer!

Got this buck fawn on December 6th using my CVA wolf my fiance got me last year with 100 grains of pyrodex powder and .50 cal 300 grain Hornady FPB bullet! Bullet did not expand but with 300 grains of lead flyin through the critter it doesn't really need to;) found the bullet the next day bout 60 feet from the exit side of where the deer was standin!







 
Congratulations should be good eating. Blackpowder is addictive, it's my favorite way to hunt deer. I've been using an old CVA Eclipse for years and have shot more deer with it than any other gun I own.

Thank you very much! Was a whole different feeling then shooting one with my 7600, knowing I only had one shot to get er done made it some exciting even though it was a fawn!

He's been real good eating, made a bunch of wood stove jerk with it last week! Salt, pepper, hang it off the stove pipe for a night, tasty viddles all day on the trap line!
 
My cousin warned me away from the FPBs because of the no expansion issue. Nothing against Hornady products as we both use the pistol bullets, XTPs which expand just fine and are cheaper.

Nice deer, thats some good eating.

I got my first muzzleloader deer as well this fall, in mid November, nice 6 point at 40 yards with a 240gr xtp, 110gr Blackhorn out of a TC Prohunter, it dropped right there.

Wasn't even in the dirt brother, it was layin on top the crust on the snow! I was sitting on a road my property back to a pond I trap and stopped him when he got out to the road, touched it off heard the big thud of the bullet hit tracked him down, gutted him all that good stuff. Then went back the next day to see if I got the shot on my trail camera cause they come out of the swamp across the little road up to the hemlock bush, didn't get the shot on camera but when I was walking back I seen somethin in the 4 wheeler track from the night before it was the bullet layin bout 60 feet from where it exited his offside rib cage!

I'm for sure switching from the FPB's for next year, I'd like to try the barnes 250 grain bullets...I just rather have a full bore bullet without a sabot but I'll try em out cause the hornady's didn't impress me he run bout 100 yards before I found him.

He's for sure good eatin, I'd rather fill a doe tag with a fawn then a doe! Much rather the bucks and fawn, I will shoot a doe but that's only if she don't got any fawns with her otherwise the fawn gets flattened. Buck trumps all though big, small, short or tall he best make track!

Congrats, I whacked my first deer ever with a 54 Hawken. No expansion on that round ball either, it sure knocked that little buck for a loop though.
I went back to the XTP bullet in my T/C Impact after experimenting with the FPB this fall. Couldn't get it to shoot worth a #### over 120gr of Pyrodex to save my life. Group size was over 8 inches. The XTP's were closer to 3.

Do you get a exit often with the XTP bullets? I really prefer 2 holes to bleed from!

The deer i shot was about 60 yards away the bullet didn't go real far after it went through...Maybe I should load'er up with 150 grains of powder?d:h:
 
I've use a 120gr volume load with a 250 gr Barnes TMZ. Before I was using the same powder charge with 250gr SST as well as the 300gr XTP. I prefer using the sabot loads over the full bore ones. It has its advantages.

Care to elaborate on the sabot loads? I've been curious to hear others experiences with them!

P.S. It's 2am go to bed! Haha ;)
 
My opinion is that by using a sabot with a smaller diameter projectiles you gain better velocities and trajectories than if you use a full bore such as a Power belt or FPB. These were created because some States require them for their muzzle loader season.

Congrats on the deer. I contemplated the these FPB bullets...but given they seem to just pencil through, I will just stay true to my XTP 300gr and short back MMP sabots.
