A retired gentleman gave me some old 22 shells that came from his Dad's collection.
The one in the centre is the old standard CIL D, for Dominion.
One on the left is marked, U, Hi SPEED. Is this the old Union Metallic Co? If it is, it is the first 22 ammo I have seen from that company.
One on the right is an M over a W. Anybody know what that is?

u=Union metallic was taken over by Remington in the 20s.
d is CIL.

not sure of the other.

M over a W munitions Werke Schoenebeck am Elbe?

If it is MM then it would be Musgrave rifle (located in Bloemfontein, Republic of South Africa)

I did a search- http://cartridgecollectors.org/?page=headstampcodes#M

Ammunitionsfabriken Marieberg, Stockholm, Sweden

Birmingham Metals & Munitions Co./Nobel, Birmingham, UK1

Milwaukee Ordnance Plant, Milwaukee, WI, USA (1942-1943)
( War time I think they only made 306.)

Munizioni e Cartucce Martignoni, Genoa, ItaLY
(mostly pinfire)

So I would say most likely Musgrave or Werke Schoenebeck.

"..."Montgomery Ward" ammo..." MW is a department store. In the old days, department stores had ammo and firearms made for them by the regular manufacturers. MW had several brands of ammo. Their firearm brand was Western Field.

Thanks guys (and gals) we got it all squared away.

Bruce, I have a full box of that Remington Hi-Speed LR ammo in a Green Box.
The Headstamp is exactly like the one you showed at the beginning.

The box says it is 1365 fps, so pretty warm 22 ammo for the day. It is unplated lead.

Regards, Dave.
