battle of the .257

First off I love the 25/06 but have always wondered bout weatherbys mag. I decided on the 25/06 because I like shorter guns and most all my hunting shots are well under 300 yards. I realize a 22" barrel handicaps the 25/06 but it cripples the 257 wby mag. I load 75 gr Vmax to 3500 fps and 117 gr interlock at 3150 fps with the 2506 A debate with a buddy got me wondering if 250 fps more justifys a longer gun and more muzzle blast.
At what point do you quarter bore fans step up or down in case capacity ? A coyote or deer will never know the head stamp either way so how do you choose?

I'm happy with the 25/06 but im sure ill end up with a 257 wby someday. I just don't know why
 
I started with a 25-06 and went down to the 257 Roberts. Now I have two Bobs, no 25-06, and I love them both, the whitetails hate them though.
 
I've had a really nice Vanguard in 257 Weatherby and two Rem. 700s in 25-06, all excellent rifles.
Sold the three and replaced them with a mint '76 vintage 257 Roberts, guess that's a sign that old age is setting in .....

I had a 257Roberts built several yrs ago with the thought of later doing the AI treatment to it. I never did get that done. It gets 3100fps with 100gr bullets.

Because the .257 Weatherby is the most devastating varmint round ever devised by the hand of man. The .25/06 is good, actually very good, but it isn't a .257 Weatherby. Weatherby put 26" pipes on his rifles for a reason. Knowing that .257 WBY brass can be made economically from 7 Rem Mag brass is another push in that direction, where expensive brass was always a good reason not to bite.
 
.257 Roberts is my choice as well. I always thought of the .257 Weatherby & 25-06 as powder waisted. Unfounded opinion though...

Powder, of course, is just that - powder. A few extra pennies in powder for blazing performance may, or may not,
be justified, depending on the shooter.

I like the 264 Win Mag, the 220 Swift, and a couple of other screamers.
When one sees how flat they really shoot, it is easy to love those high performance rounds.

That doesn't mean we categorically reject the milder chamberings, though.
I have always had a soft spot for the 257 Roberts and the 7x57. :)

I shoot the Bob and the Roy, love them both and wouldn't sell either one..................by the way there is 400 fps between a 25-06 24" and a 257 Roy 26"...........I bought 500 new W-W 264 WM cases and make my Roy brass from this. Gotta watch neck thickness when downsizing the 7 RM.
 
I like the .25's. Have 6 different rifles.

If I had to pick a favourite it would be the 250 Ackley.

No flies on a 257 Weatherby.

Just as a FYI, 85 grain Ballistic Tips pushed out of the 'Bee are not fur friendly! ;)
 
Of the quarter bores, .25/06 is plenty for me... Had a Bob but couldn't find a use for it between my .243 and .260... But my swap barrel set in .25/06, .30/06 and .35 Whelen has such a beautiful symmetry and usefulness... It really speaks to the OCD in me....
 
If I was 20 years younger I might have a deep desire for a 257 Weatherby as I love all things 25 caliber. My assortment includes a Win feather bob, a Win feather 257 AI,a ruger 77 International in 250 Savage, a Savage model 14 in 250 and a mid 70's Sako L61R deluxe in 25-06.
I was on a pronghorn hunt this past Oct. with a fellow using a 257 Weatherby and he made a fine shot at 367 yards on a breezy morning, same weekend another fellow shooting a Bob AI dropped his buck at 394 yards with a 100gr TSX on both animals. My 25-06 shot was just over 320, but I had zero wind to contend with. FS
 
The only 25 I've got is the Bob and I love it, that being said I would love to find a Ruger for sale in 250 Savage.... Not that I need it but it would be fun.
I've owned 25-06, it worked well but it burned a lot of powder and the deer don't notice a difference.

I'm in the middle of a .25-08 Improved (.25 Humdinger) build right now, and I'm looking forward to seeing what it'll do. I figure I'll get performance right around the Bob without pushing it too hard. Although the Weatherby sure speaks to me...... I think I'll end up with one of those before too long.
 
I bought a Ruger #1 for the action and it had the factory 25-06 rechambered to 257wby. Figured I'd give it a shoot before tearing the barrel off. Turned out it sprayed bullets like a shotgun.

I'm more of a 6.5mm and 7mm type of guy but I did pick up a nice Remington CDL stainless fluted in 257wby that I havent had a chance to shoot yet.

I'm also going to start a 257wby build on a stainless Sako 75 action next month. Shillen #2 barrel and eventually end up in a McMillan Edge stock.

I had the same thoughts the other day - i had a Ruger M77 25-06 for a few years - shot some yotes-deer & black bears with it so i have have had a iche for another Quarter Bore - i was going to buy a Weatherby S2 25-06 from a buddy but it got sold before i could get him the cash so i checked out Prohet River and Clay had a Weatherby S2 SS 257 WBee in stock - so my FIRST Weatherby Rifle and 257 Mag along with some Talley Lightweights and a Redding 3 die set he sent it to me - I mounted a new Vortex 4-16 x 44 HS up on it with the Talleys. I have loaded 85 Nosler Blue Tips up over some RL22 with Fed215 primers in once fired Weatherby brass. Maybe get to shoot them soon - Hoping for around 3700 fps ! :D RJ
