Ruger has announced the American in .223 this spring. I think these rifles are perfect for the .223. Short, light, and with the 1 in 8 twist enough to shoot the heavier bullets.

But, I don't think we'll get to see them for 3-5 yrs. Ruger needs to build another plant.

P.S. Merry Christmas to all !

Absolutely awesome news. As soon as i can lay my hands on one,i'll own it. I sent of a suggestion on this and .204 when they first announced the .22-250. They said they were looking into it but felt the most demand would be for .22-250. I wonder how a compact in .223 would shoot with the 18" barrel?

I would think it should shoot pretty darn good.
My only concern would be if the stock has much flex.
The only Ruger American I shot seemed to have a certain amount of flex in the stock when shooting off a rest...

P.S. Merry Christmas to all !

My local gun shop owner was told by his wholesaler that Ruger was building a plant in Canada strictly for Canadian users. Once again that is rumour, and I dont know if it is true but it would be nice!

Merry Christmas to you too!

I would have settled for a .22-250 with the 1 in 10 twist, but nobody has even those. The Americans keep buying up everything available leaving nothing to ship up here, I'm guessing.

WOW!!! Just looked at the Ruger site and saw the array of options, std/compact, black/stainless and even a combo w/Redfield scope. I really like the combo, as that would have been the scope I would have put on anyway. Some pretty smart people down there at Ruger. I still think it will be a while before we see any.

I think a 7mm-08 in stainless is definitely on the menu. Anyone fire one in .308? How is the recoil? This is a very light rifle after all!

I Have one of the ruger American in 308, no problems with recoil, the fit and recoil pad work well for me. Been using it for past 7 months.

Would like one of the compact models in 243 for the kids, but can't find any in Canada.
