Sheep Hunting in Alberta

There are plenty of options that would ensure a lower harvest without having to wait 15 years for a draw. Going to full curl in some areas, progressive wait periods (skip one year after first ram, skip three after second, skip 6 after third ect.)

Track, may I ask why you advocate for a draw?

It would be a 40 year wait minimum in decent WMUs. 80% of rams taken are a hunter's first ram so progressive wait times would have virtually no effect.

And they had that discussion and elected to do nothing because they couldn't really put a finger on what the problem was and they agreed much of the data was very unreliable. A new study is under way that may shed some new light and they are waiting for the results. I thought you had something up to date Duffy...apparently not. The new study Kneteman is doing should be considerably more reliable and shed a new light on the sheep situation in Alberta. Why would we do anything without seeing his results?

Just as I thought you really didn't want to see anything unless it was something you agreed with. I am pretty sure we are not going to influence anything to do with Sheep hunting in Alberta on here.

I will be talking with Ian up in Fort Mack at the conference.

Please Duffy, if you have something share with us. I'm all about keeping current on this issue. If you had something of substance it could have significant influence on me.
You keep ignoring my comments about Knetemen's study....what's your thoughts on it?

I do find it interesting in this thread that the people that don't hunt sheep, aren't up to date on the research and one admittedly doesn't know anything about sheep are also the vocal ones about supporting the draw. That tells me pretty well everything I need to know about those people.

I put in for draws in Alberta when I lived there for years in one area. Then they brought in the new draw system where you actually had a chance too get a draw instead of people getting drawen every year and others never and they closed the season for that draw for ever.
For some areas it would take a long time to get drawen as there would be maybe 4 tags and 3000 people trying for them. Took 10 years to get a antelope draw again after my first one. But sheep are not a dime a dozen anymore either.

Sheep are in decline in many areas, a good friend and member here, was one of the count pilots this year. He was pretty shocked.

I am not at all convinced this is the solution however, I would be for the full curl, general tag.

From everything I have read lately, the population is stable, province wide. I'm sure it's up in some areas and down in others, but the supposed problem according to the guy who wrote the report is some people would prefer if there were less sheep hunters.

I agree about the full curl-general tag thing though. If something needs to be done in an area to help the population out, I would hope this would be the first resort.

Back to the OP....hopefully Alberta sheep hunters take time to send Ian an email with your thoughts on this critical issue. I'm sure he'll appreciate some informed opinions.

What counts are you talking about?

I would also like more information on these counts.....
