battle of the .257

Proof that he actually has the aforementioned rifle, though that carpet is just about unique enough to stand in for the moosehead-dealie.

Which reminds me, Johnn, have you seen Ted this season? Remember that you have to moosehead-dealie him to prove you were actually there!
As I posted earlier in the Off Topics forum, Ted was down yesterday and met with some of the local CGNers for lunch ans a chat session at Salty's Fish & Chips in Duncan.

During the meal, Ted did make mention of the 'Moose thing' but I didn't twig on to the significance of it until you made mention of it now,:redface:I forgot:redface::redface:. I will have it at the next meeting, I promise.

Should call it OLD Salty's Fish & Chips by the looks of that gathering. :dancingbanana:

:)That's another way of putting it. In the his post in the Off Topics forum, Looky put it a slightly different way, asking "How many centuries sitting there if'n you added up the ages"? Between the two fo you;)it's hard to say who's kinder or more diplomatic:p.

I've found that old folk are far more funner to hang out with. They tell better stories and don't care how other regard them.

Well, between you and Ted there must be most of 2.

Fish and chips...Mmmmm.........

"...I just don't know why..." "I want one." is reason enough.
"...wondered bout weatherbys mag..." The word 'Weatherby' adds to the cost of anything it is on. None of 'em do anything any other cartridge won't. The ammo just costs more. Think $45 per 20 and up.
"...is the most devastating varmint round ever devised..." Nonsense.

Perhaps it is nonsense, but it sounds good. At least you could have quoted the entire sentence so as to capture the panache it deserves. On the other hand a 75 gr bullet kissing 4000 fps is pretty good, would be pretty devastating, and I'm having a tough time thinking of another commercial round that will beat it. As for cost of factory ammo, I have no idea, I do my best to avoid buying the stuff.

In a weird twist Weatherby ammo in .257, .270 and .300 Weatherby is cheaper locally than the empty brass. I actually pull down the .270s to use the brass, but since the .300s shoot so well with the factory fodder that I shoot that while letting the brass pile grow.

Ive got one of each quarter bores a 250 savage, a 257 Roberts, a 25-06 and a 257wby. All kill deer very dead. The 257 gets used most, simply because its bigger. I like speed so Its the winner for me. But with that being said I would never part with any of them. A 25-06 is an excellent cartridge, I think you need one of each

...... Also ordered a 257 STW reamer for myself yesterday. Finding the right powder is going to be the biggest challenge for the STW because of powder bridging issues.....

I haven't encountered powder bridging myself, but if the remedy is ball powders, the pickings are slim if you seek maximum velocity, i.e. Ramshot magnum, H870 (if you can find it) and US869. The latter can push 100 gr bullets past 3900 fps with ease, and can be accurate. There are several "stick" powders that work well, my best experience being with Retumbo at about 3800 fps.

Metamucil would go better than fish and chips with the crowd in that picture.:D I had a 25-06 for a couple of years and got rid of it, found it lacking but not sure why, the 257 wby intrigues me though.

Yes. I did some research on the 257 Allan mag as well as the STW and those powders you list are the go to choices.
Good to know about the us869 in the STW with the 100g I looked for some data on it but haven't found anyone other than your self who has tried it.
