Thinking about a ported 44 or 454/45. My previous experience was a Colt Anaconda, long ago sold. I was happy with it, but taming the recoil flip would be nice. I'm only interested in those who have actual shooting experience with the Taurus please. Thanks.

I've have a 44mag model that I absolutely love and a 454 model that I bought and should have next week. They are great revolvers, well built and strong, you can fire full house loads all day long through them. They are also very accurate, my 44 RB is one of my most accurate revolvers. The action is an improved version of S&W's action, but S&W's still have a better trigger. The porting is great, it really reduces muzzle flip, of my 44 mag revolvers the RB has the least amount of recoil and muzzle flip. The only downsides to the porting is it makes the revolver obnoxiously loud and if you shoot lead bullets you will get some lead build up on the outside of the barrel above the ports.

One thing I really don't like about the Raging Bull is the lack of availability of aftermarket sights, but that's a problem for sight manufactures and not Taurus.

The grip on the Raging Bull line is possibly the best at taming the impulse of a heavy round. The S&W X-Frame is also very good but the gun it's attached to is usually very large.

That said, the 454 round is a handful in pretty much any gun. A hard sharp recoil. Even in my Raging Judge Magnum it'll get your attention.

If your looking at 454, I'd say find a S&W 460V. It made shooting the 454 pretty nice, even softer than the Judge.

For a 44MAG track down a Ruger Super Redhawk, the grip is very good and the extra weight helps with recoil.

Hope that helps.

Good stuff. I think carrying around the X-frame would get old. 44 would probably be enough; hard to make good calls without hands on; have to start window shopping far in advance I guess.

If you can find a 5" Raging Bull in 454 it's a great size compromise and you can fire off 45LC and even Ruger Only 45 loads.

Just tough finding a 5" version for a decent price.

I bought my 5" 454 RB from irunguns.com I couldn't find one in Canada, I think I paid $750ish for it.

Too bad I've already sold mine otherwise I'd say you could shoot it. Basically it's a heavy, badass looking, piece of steel. For .454 it was actually one of the lighter shooters I've felt, but for the love of god don't compare it to companies that care about finish ;). Overall I was happy with it, and for the price point was impressed. You're not getting a high end Python or Anaconda finish, but definitely a workhorse.

Where Taurus does good work is in their large frame lineup.

I had a Raging Bull a while back, great handgun, probably miss it the most of all the guns I've sold... As for the muzzle flip there is almost none! porting takes care of that you just get a push back but the rubber grip absorbs it quite well.

I have the raging bull in 44 and the raging judge as well as the S&W 29-10 and the RB really does tame full house 44's nicely. As others have mentioned the fit and finish is nowhere near that of a S&W but for the price I paid for it I don't care. I can shoot hot loads through it and not have to worry about it.
