$1000 budget, find me a rifle!

I just picked up a new x-bolt on special at lebarons for $754. Hunter model, so walnut and blued. I haven't seen any tikka hunters at that price. Another thing to keep in mind for price is that the x-bolt already has a great recoil pad on it. The tikka does not. Both your choices of cartridges are fairly stout in the recoil department so you would be well served to replace the factory tikka pad with a limbsaver. If you pay a shop to install a grind to fit pad on it'll be another $100 for that - $50 for pad and $50 for labour. So evaluate that into the cost of the tikka
I believe Lebaron has the T3 hunter in .30/06 on for $765 .

Im in smal town SK and am about 3 hours away from any major retailer (Cabelas, WSS etc.) so ill be purchasing from one of those 2 most likely. Cabelas wants $949 before tax for a Browning X-Bolt Hunter in .300 WM and $899 for a tikka t3 hunter in 300 WM. The winchester M70 fwt in .300 WSM is $919 so they are all similar priced

What city are you near those prices seem high to me. Seen a browning hunter 300wm for $849 just the other day.
Cabelas is over priced and records your info also

My closest Cabelas is Regina. Those are online prices too I should add. I really dont like WSS cause of the customer service. They have no desire to even help a customer out

The first [& last] place I'd spend $1000 for a rifle/scope combo would be the EE.

I doubt very much you could do better anywhere else, esp with all the current new and nearly rifles listed post Christmas.

I hate the cheap feel of the Tikkas, I went the X-Bolt Stainless Stalker in 300WSM and love it, it shoots great and will shoot better once I develop a good hand load. The X-Bolt in the WSM is a real short action where the Tikka is not. Lots of options that shoot just as well as a Tikka and feel way better!

I agree with the earlier advice about using the EE to find a really good rifle. I think the tikka, browning, winchester, weatherby, or higher end savage rifles do the job, but personally I would be looking for a used sako, or higher end rifle on the EE.

My father-in-law just picked up a Browning X-bolt in 300WM, it is nice, nice, nice. :) He hasn't shot it yet, but let me handle it, very smooth action, doesn't feel cheap, nice mag, and it fit me like a glove. His is the composite Stalker version, stock is really nice as well, doesn't feel like a chunk of plastic like some others do.

Well I got $1000 bucks set away for a new rifle (depending on price that $1000 may include the scope), however I just can't decide what make/model to go with, here are my "wants" (some can subbed out depending on make and model)

1)Must be a Bolt Action
2)Must be in either 7mm rem mag or .300 win mag (WSM will work)
3)prefer wood stock but a nice looking, durable synthetic doesnt hurt my feelings either
4)detachable mag (if i can help it)
5)lighter the better
6)NO open sites

Stainless or blued doesnt bother me, if SS is only $50 more ill take the stainless
Prefer a well known gun for accuracy

I had in mind a Browning X-Bolt Hunter, tikka t3 hunter or a winchester model 70 featherweight however if you guys have any other options or opinions feel free to share

P.S. Hope everyone had a Merry Christmas and best wishes to all in 2014

Great time to look for a sale, the world's your oyster!
