I really want a MP5, but to the best of my knowledge they are 12.6?

Being that I only have my RPAL, the Famae SAF seems like a nice second?

Anyone own one of these? What do you guys think about the famae?

I don't own one but I've seen them around, I wanted to get one but the price was a bit too high for what it was especially since these days people prefer SBR's over pistol calibre carbines. I do love the look of one especially with the mp5 stock, and maybe one day ill get one. Have you considered the Kriss Vector? It's a bit cheaper and becoming popular and uses glock mags (10 rounds as opposed to 5).

I'm pro-famae. Mechanically their quite different, but visually they're on the ball. The SAF mini just feels right.

Hey there's photos

The 12(6) category is only comprised of prohibited handguns.

The MP5 is prohibited by name through the Prohibited Weapons Order No. 13, which makes it 12(5).

Cheers.

I'm pro-famae. When I'm back at a real PC I'll post some.snaps.

Did you ever get a chance to shoot any of the famae's you've tried on paper at 100 yards?

I seem to recall talk of an accuracy range report pending after some of your previous reviews.

hk 94, 12/5, hk mp5 12/2

12(2) refers to fully automatics in general. As the MP5 is also available in semi-auto, it was, as stated above, prohibited by name through Prohibited Weapons order No. 13, which would make it 12(5).

Former Prohibited Weapons Order No. 13 (in effect since January 1, 1995)

The firearms of the designs commonly known as the MP5 submachine gun and MP5 carbine, and any variants or modified versions of them, including the Heckler and Koch:
HK MP5;
HK MP5A2;
HK MP5A3;
HK MP5K;
HK MP5SD;
HK MP5SD1;
HK MP5SD2;
HK MP5SD3;
HK 94;
HK 94A2; and,
HK 94A3.

If your really in need for that MP5 fix and not grandfathered 12.2 / 12.3 / or 12.5, then your only options are:

1. Famae SAF / Mini SAF
2. H&K USC / UMP
3. High end Airsoft (dear mods please don't give me a speeding ticket for using the "A" word)
4. Own one by having an American you trust to have possession of it for you and let you shoot it when you visit the USA.
5. Become an American and own it there.
6. Become a museum licenced to have such treasures. (will not be allowed to shoot them)
7. Start a firearm business that sells such items to government agencies.
8. Specter arms makes an MP5/Ruger 10/22 crossbreed
9. Deactivated MP5

My wife loves the MP5 and has taken options 2 and 3. I recommend 1,2, or 3. I know of a guy who did option 4 for a H&K G3. I know a guy who is grandfathered all classes that also did option 6. Lastly I know two different guys who did option 7. They tried to talk me into it and was put off by the enormous red tape.

My wife contemplated the Famae SAF as it was closest in look and role. She went with the USC (UMP conversion) as her choice as it was more MP5 like in function. (HK Slap)

I used to own a famae saf. It is a fun gun and very reliable, but mags are very hard to come by ( that may have changed, I don't know). Also the quality of the finish and welds leave a lot to be desired. I do know there are a small number of hk umps, and g36k in the country, they might be something to consider if you don't mind spending lots of money and have the time to track one down.

The price point & 5 round mags of the SAF-200 have always been the factors keeping me from purchasing one.

$2,200 + shipping + taxes is a little steep.

Yes the mags can be coupled together, but it's a pistol carbine and should thus use actual pistol mags.

I talked to Tactical imports and they informed me they were 5 round carbine mags and it might be possible to get .45 acp mags which would increase capacity to 6 or 7 rounds.

The US is now manufacturing Famae stuff, so prices might come down but who knows.

f it, tired of arguing this. f/a mp5 is 12/2, if it was converted to semi, is 12/3 and the semi only from factory should be 12/5 this list tells nothing of which class each is in. my hk94 is 12/5

If its f/a, its 12(2). If its converted auto its 12(3), and if its a named prohib semi it is 12(5).

Really the 12(5) guns are all the semi auto only variants of scary guns that have f/a or c/a variants already banned. Just a way of wrapping up the scary weapon round up.

As to the original post, I love the MP5. Great fun in f/a. No recoil, amazingly accurate at pistol range with 32 round mag dumps on f/a and cheap to feed. Wish I could have one here.

A Famae SAF with fixed stock and iron sights has been on my drool list for a while.

I really wanted a Mini SAF based on the feel and appearance, but I quickly lost that desire after spending some time with one at the local range. The mags felt fragile in use, and the trigger seemed VERY long in pull with a mushy break. The BRS-99 trigger and mags in comparison make the FAMAE feel so-so.

Mags are covered under warranty, we've only had one or two break out of the 300+ we brought in.

Trigger is adjustable, You can change the point where the second stage engages the break by just moving how far the second stage screw engages. It is set to engage long before the break at the factory, making for a mushy feeling break unless adjusted. (Trigger adjusting is done at own risk)

You website shows no mags in stock? Are you getting any more and are the mags pinned internally or by rivets?

I often thought that there might be a chance that the LAR15 9mm 10rd pistol mags would be close to fitting the SAF. Or that small tweeking to the mag well would be needed. Being that the mags for both guns are 9mm, double row, and straight smg style and not angled like pistol mags normaly are,'

I actually quite like the trigger as it comes from the factory. Sure the pull is heavy but it's really consistent and since the break isn't very predictable it's easier for me to get "surprised" by it. It sounds counter-productive but it really helps me shoot more accurately.

I've added the MP5 style fixed stock on mine and fitted a Nill grip from a sig 550. Let's say it's an attention getter at the range! :)
