Im planning to build a coyote rifle in 22-250 off a Sako 75 action.
I want to come in betweeen 6.5-7lbs unscoped with a 21 or 22'' barrel.

I'd like to shoot a 60ish grain bullet out of the rifle. Maybe something
like a 60gr. V-max. I cant ever see wanting to move up to the heavier
bullets since I have other rifles I can use to cover that area.

Most factory 22-250's seem to come in 1-14 twist which I think will be
too slow for the medium weight bullets.
Some people online are suggesting a 1-9 twist but that seems pretty quick
to me.

Just wondering if maybe a 1-12 twist would be a good compromise.

I put a 1:9" Shilen on my faux TI 22/250.

1:12 twist will stabalize a 69gr bullet quite well, but not much heavier. If you want the option to go with a 70+ gr bullet then go with the 1:9 twist.

My .22-250 stabilizes the 60 grain Sierra HP with the 1 in 14 twist.
I plan on using a .223 barrel with a 1 in 12 twist when I re-barrel and my favourite gunsmith believes this is a workable plan.

Have you tried any 60 grain varmint bullets?

60 grain Hornady bullets are not quite as good.
Had some excellent results with Imperial 55 grain HPBT but the case of 500 is almost empty.
My DIL shot a .99 (o-o) at 200 m @ 12X and shortly thereafter shot a .53 (c-c) @ 24 X.

My 22-250 has 1in14 ROT I was getting 1.5-2" groups with 55gr. it tightned up to 0.5-0.75 when i droped down to 50gr.

I believe todbartell did a small post on these over on the PHC forum. Can't remember if they were out of a .223 or 22-250 mind you.
Hopefully he'll chime in & offer some knowledge until that board is back up and running again.

Anyone try the 53gr vmax? The bc on them is .290 that is better then the 60gr bullets I have seen.

I shoot em out of my 223 with stellar results as well as my 22-250.

I have a 1-8" twist .22-250. I shoot 75 gr amax. If I had to do it again, (since your buying a new barrel) I'd go 1-10" twist and throat it for the 53gr vmax. I'd leave the finished barrel length at 22".

I've definately been thinking of the 1-10 and 1-12 twists.

I'm just waiting for the rifle in the mail so I can measure the inside mag length to see what I have for OAL to work with. The rifle is currently chambered in 7-08 so I'm sure OAL wise, I'll have plenty of room.
Just need to order a long throat reamer from PT&G.
