What do you think about sighting a rifle off a bench using a grip pod? You would rest the grip pod on the bench, and then grip the grip pod with your support hand.

Would that be a good or bad way to sight in a rifle? Or would it be better to just take off the grip pod and rest the handguard on a sand bag?

If it is a free floated rifle they work OK.

If used on a fiberglass hanguard they are worse than useless, same goes for resting a non free floating handguard on anything. Sand bag, helmet, rucksack or even a rolled up unicorn hide, it will shift your POI high.
Weak hand on the grip pod works pretty well and keeps the muzzle down but you need to keep the pod near the mag well which raises the question why not just use the mag as a monopod.
The best use I have seen is keeping your rifle out of the dirt, same as the G36 and Sig bipods.
The secret to a great zero is to zero in prone the same way you plan on shooting then confirm that, that zero is correct. Standing, prone, kneeling, sitting, it must be the same or you have an issue. Just as confirming a 25/200m zero requires you to shoot 200m.

sand bag front and rear is a good way, what are you zeroing? and what ammo?

Might get some first hand experience if you post same question in the red rifle forum. Somebody might have already tried and be able to give you a yay or nay.

Yes. I tried to Zero my non free float 20" AR once with a bipod installed up front the hand guard. Without the bipod my POI shifted 4" low at 100 meters. Not good.
Freefloat or grip the rifle a way you don't put any up down left right pressure on the barrel.

What you can do is yes remove it. Use the mag as a monopod and put your hand near the receiver or the mag well. Just not too much up front so it "bends" the barrel form the receiver.
