yeah, I have a 460V and when I shoot it in my indoor club dust falls from the ceiling and everyone wanders over asking wtf was that.

the 460 throws a 200 grain to 300 grain (factory loads that I buy) at about 2100 fps or so. whereas the 500 has some factory loads up to 500 grain (from buffalo bore) and I think those are approaching 1500 fps.

The .460V, with the right load, has more terminal energy and a better ballistic coefficient. The .500 is the larger calibre production revolver made though, S&W came out with it specifically to recapture the glory of the Model 29 days and Dirty Harry's "the most powerful production handgun".

They lost that title long ago, but have recaptured it with the X-frames. Personally, I prefer the 5" 460V to this .500 model. YMMV.

I have a part box of Hornady 500 grain FP XTP which they claim are 1425 fps at the muzzle.
I never put them over a crono, but I can warn you not to try and shoot 5 rounds as quickly as you can because if you are anything like me you will have great difficulty cracking a beer for about 2 months after that.
If you don't beleive me, for the low price of $30.00, I'll let you try it for yourself as these bullets are just sitting on the shelf doing nothing.
I'm now shooting the Hornady 300 grain FTX which is much more comfortable. When those are gone, I'll be reloading. $75.00 for a box of 20 is a little rich for my blood.
 
460 you can also shoot 454casull and 45long colt, Whereas the 500 you can only shoot the 500 round

Becomes a non-issue once you start reloading. Just put a half-charge of powder in, and you have yourself a .500-Special.

Yes indeed. Reloading is the only way to really enjoy these guns unless you are Mr. Burns.

Ya, only if you don't reload, but you should be rolling your own ammo for these revolvers anyway. You can load the 500S&W from mild to wild with 2 powders, one bullet choice, and one set of dies. You can push a 350XTP to 1800 fps which is nothing to laugh at.
 
I picked up a 460V and a 500 with an 8 3/8" barrel and interchangeable compensators recently. Have not shot either but am very excited. Locally I can get the Hornady 200 gr FTX (9152) for 28.99 a box and the Hornady 350 gr XTP Mag (9250) for 63.99 a box. Since investing in a bit of this ammo I have since ordered an RCBS Rock Chucker Supreme reloading kit to reload the spent brass. Everyone says these two revolvers are a blast (no pun intended) so I can't wait. Any advice, warnings or just general info in regards to reloading either of these would be appreciated.
 
That advice has been recommended to me by more than one individual. Thank you for stressing the importance of preventing the double tap.
