Quick hunt scores with a nice healthy female… Only time for one stand this morning so wanted to make sure I made the most of it by making the 40 minute ride to the farm an early one. Getting there and setting up before legal light I got settled in and waited. I had my ecaller on mute but my decoy on and moving. As legal shooting time arives I start off with a couple coyote greeting sounds from my new hand caller. I wait about a minute get out one of my rabbit distress hand calls and start screaming with it for about 40 secs or so…. I wait a minute or so and do it again for about 30 secs or so and stop…Its really calm out there this morning and sound is traveling far and is loud so I decide next sound is coming from my ecaller as the screaming is giving me a headache…lol ….As I scan the area and start thinking about which call to play from the ecaller I notice a fence post in the distance that I didn't notice before. So put my optics up and yes a coyote is sitting on the edge of the bush looking toward my setup… I slowly grab my hand squeaker call and give a few soft shots on it and sure enough she begins her way down toward the setup… She pauses once….I give a little soft call again and she continues right on in, she is fixated on the decoy. As she gets about 75yds out she starts to turn (angle off a bit) possible to check the wind? I wolf her she stops but is quartering me and angled downward, I take the (poor) shot…bang….she runs (no spinning just running) I reload, try and find her in my scope line her up and take the 2nd shot….. miss….. She makes it to the bush…. I play coyote pup distress for about 5 minutes, nothing showed so decide to go see if I hit her at all… I walk over to impact and see some blood, not much but I hit her….start following her tracks/little blood trail but within 10 yds I start to see internal organs on the ground,yikes.... blood trail gets a little better and more small body organs are found… I get to the bush she ran into and she is done… Looks like I made a poor shot on her missing her chest area but opening up her belly...Thinking back the problem may have been I zoomed the scope right up when I first saw her (12x) and left it at that for the 75yd shot making looking through the scope cross-hairs (at such a close range) just too shaky.. Next time I will leave it on 4x…
