Squamish Valley BC Mule Deer

Went out to Squamish Valley this fall to try and bag a Mule deer. My best friend and I really only saw bucks before dawn on the road. We would drive around, bush whack and sit and we saw nothing ! We even had a buck call with us and we heard nothing. With mule deer is it just a right time right place kind of thing or it is better to walk and track or sit and wait ? would they be lower on the mountain or up in the snow ? We would always see lots of tracks as well as lots of wolf tracks.

Any info would be great !

Welcome to the world of blacktail deer hunting ! They are there, but you mostly won't find them from the seat of a pickup truck. Park the truck, find the game trails, then go after them. You need to get into position before they are there, or they won't be there. As stated above, check out huntingbc, and proguide66 in particular, and that will get you going.
 
There are only Black tails around Squamish. They are the toughest deer to hunt out of all the species in north america. They spend only 17% of there movements in legal shootable light. Proguide66 on huntingBC.com is your guy to ask questions. Ive been hunting them for years and its a huge learning curve. The only one I ever shot was a two point when i was stalking a black bear and accidentally ran into a blacktail. Good luck. If you can master blacktail hunting then any other game is a breeze. trust me !
 
The absolute best thing you can do....in my humble opinion of course, and the opinion of many others with way more experience than me....is to get out in the off season and learn a spot. Get out and look for droppings and rubs, winter and spring is a good time to do that as the recent season rubs will look fairly obvious. Another way to look at it is to figure out where they're feeding...droppings....and then work backwards to figure out where their hang out area is. Summer is a good time to get out too as they will be out in the open....more often anyway... feeding heavily. Each spot is different and the specifics of that spot need to be learned. If I were you I would find a slash that is a bit harded to get to and start there, learning the areas surrounding it. All that being said, the deer up there can/will migrate so that can throw a wrench into things as well. The pursuit is totally addicting.
