we are going bowhunting for spring black bear, but there is grizzlies and black bears, cougars and wolves where we are going, I am thinking bout what load would be best to load the maverick 88 (12 gauge with a 20" barrel) with just in case s#*t really hits the fan so to speak
should I alternate buckshot n slug or just go loaded with slugs, we will have bear spray as a first line of defence

In my opinion, for whatever that's worth, buckshot for use against bears in a defensive situation has only one very specific application; that is for use in a populated campground or in a town where over penetration by a slug or rifle bullet creates a danger to others. Keep the magazine full of slugs, then if you need to single load a different type of shell (buckshot, cracker shell, or a rubber bullet or rubber buckshot) its then a simple matter of dropping it into the ejection port and pushing the slide home. On ejection, just be alert to the possibility of popping a slug load out of the magazine and onto the elevator.

Slugs all the way when it comes to Grizzly bears....

incidentally I've seen videos where bears at a distance were scared off either with a warning shot or a shot that missed... there's a great video out there somewhere that shows a charging bear shot at from a boat with a magnum hand gun and the bear did an about face and ran.

Just saying you don't always have to kill the bear if you don't want to... close quarters well that's another story

Oh I just want to add I don't have much faith in bear spray as a first line of defense... If I had time, warning shot first.... if not and I have a shotgun and a grizzly is coming my way at short distance, I'm not looking for bear spray

You'd best check AB's hunting regs. In Ontario, and likely most other jurisdictions, having a firearm in an archery only WMU is strictly forbidden. Regardless of the reason.
In any case, don't even think about buckshot of any size. It's useless. Slugs only. Mind you, you'll never be fast enough if any of those beasties is close and want a taste of you. Big kitties come from above and behind, so you might as well wear Tobasco sauce as after shave. It's highly unlikely Yogi or any of his neighbours, except Cindy with cubs, will bother you anyway. You stink of nothing but trouble for any of 'em. Startle or get between Cindy and her cubs and you'll be in serious trouble, but won't ever be fast enough.

I wish I had a link to that video of the guy shooting at the Griz charging him while he was in his boat.. she had cubs and wasn't that far... that guy pulled his gun pretty fast, was impressive

Ya I seen that video, it was actually from Easton bowhunting show, a mama bear blasted outa the bush and the guide shot his gun right in front of her and stopped the charge and didn't have to shoot her

We best all do everything in our power not to get in to that situation.
Do your homework on bear behavior.

I prospect in Alaska and carry bear spray and a 870 with 3" magnum slugs.
If it ever happens, it will likely go down very quick!

I couldn't stop MY 50lb dog from ripping the face off another dog with bear spray. 3 big blasts -1/2 a can directly in his face from 2ft. Good luck stopping an infuriated animal 10 times heavier/stronger/tougher.

He was protecting me btw.

Yep here is the full video I finally found it..... oh and it was a brown bear

Embedded for easier viewing.

Yup, he drew pretty quick. He also had a general bearing on where the bear was going to come out from and was alerted that momma was around by the presence of the cubs.

Thanks for that & yes he knew where the bear was coming from & also may have had his hand already on his pistol.... like I would have lol
