Wolf Hunting Rifle/Cal.

If and when I go I would take my hunting rifle, a Model 700 in 280 Remington with a Leupold VX6 2 - 12 X and CDS using a 140 grain Barnes TTSX starting at 3000 fps.
Second choice would be a .2506, also a Remington 700 with a 2.5 - 16 Bushnell 6500 and 120 grain Sierra HPBT at 3000 fps

.223 is enough rifle for 100-200 pound critters - in fact that is what it was designed for. :) Twist rate and velocity has at least as much influence on "tumbling" as bullet construction.

I don't know what a "classic: wolf cartridge should be, but i'd lean towards a .243 or bigger myself. One of the 25 calibers would be my first choice if i wasn't concerned about selling the fur.

LOL....I kinda like the idea of a SKS on a bi-pod with a 100 round drum magazine for wolf defense! If nothing else, it'll scare the **** out of them.

Are you seriously suggesting that 7.62 x 39 is a good wolf caliber?

Are you seriously suggesting a wolf needs anything bigger?

Have you seen what 7.62x39 does to the inside of a mule deer (which is much bigger then a wolf) at 100 and 200 yards?

I know hunters that drop black bear each season with 7.62x39 and 30/30... So why not a wolf?

Because wolf hunting often involves taking shots at a running animal or having to find the target extremely quickly while it is very briefly standing still.... Rifle choice aside, do you really want to attempt this with a cartridge that has 6 inches of drop at 200 yards off a 50 yard zero?.... Not to mention that in many hunting scenarios for wolf, shots far exceed 200 yards.....

I'm not referring to the bullet performance but more towards the instrument used to put it on target.... My choice would be a quarterbore like a 25-06 or 257 bob....

You inferred that a 410 shotgun with slugs is a better choice than a SKS 7.62x39 for wolf, and i'd like to know why you think that. Do you have a lot of experieince with 410 slugs grouping better than 3" at 100yards? What slug and what shotgun were you using to get results like that? :)

Hoytcannon actually brought the 410 into the discussion.... That being said, my son's remington 870 in .410 scoped with cantilevered rifled barrel and 3" sabots will punch a 3" group at 100.... How many SKS's can actually punch a regular 3" group at 100 yards since you brought up that number?

Yikes!!! I thought Mr. Calum was "stirring the pot" with the SKS recommendation... I was adding fuel to the fire by throwing in the .410 with slugs... Apparently everyone missed the "winky face..."

Oh... and nobody is suggesting a .410 is a good choice for wolf... simply using it as an example to show what a poor choice an sks is......

I got three one day with my muzzleloader...I bet I'd have got a whole lot more with an SKS....lol
