It's not the size that matters, it's how you use it!

Will you take a trade on one of these beauties? I have a like new AR with only 100 rounds through it....

So would it be possible to order a NR rifle with an 18.5" barrel on a micro chassis in 7.62x39, thanks.
Maybe I should be asking if you can convert a micro to NR by changing to an 18.5" barrel?

Having two barrels one 7.5" and the other 18.5" would be very appealing so long as the firearm remained NR when using the longer barrel, is there a way to make this possible.

That isn't possible either way. Also as soon as you put that short barrel on the rifle it has be registered as a restricted firearm or you are automatically in possession of a non-registered firearm. When you put the long barrel back on you would have to reverse the process unless you are okay having a long barrel restricted firearm. Also with the gas sysem setups etc, you can't do what you would like on the XCR

Thanks for the quick and informative reply Grumpy.
I thought that there would be difficulty with maintaining NR status in this scenario, but hoped I was wrong.
I did not know that the gas system would not be compatible for the micro set-up and a 18.5" barrel, very good to know.

It is one of those things where we would hate to see someone get in trouble for, as it could easily happen.
