Nikon or Leupold

Hi,
I just bought a Rem VTR in .243 and it needs a new scope.
I plan on joining a range with a 200m range and also going north of 89 to do some deer hunting likely be able to shoot longer distance up there, but I'm not sure what scope I will need.
I have a $300 budget.
So far the options are a use Leupold vx 3x9 40mm
or a new Nikon 3x9 40mm
just wondering if that will be enough scope or should I get on with more magnifaction? or save for a bit better scope?
Any help or suggestions would be great.
oh yea warrenty is an issue (I have no luck at all with used things) so id rather buy new unless the scope brand has good warrenty program
 
Leupold has awesome lifetime warranty/service through Korth Group in Canada. I would not hesitate to buy a used scope. Nikon has been sliding the past couple years, and while they still make some good products, they now require proof of purchase for warranty work without charges. I would avoid.

Buy a used Leupold, you can step up to VX2/VX3 possibly for the price of a new VX
 
I've owned only a couple of Nikon products, and had one experience with their warranty service. I will never spend another dime on a Nikon.

I've had a couple dozen Leupolds, and a couple of warranty issues. Quick turn-around, outstanding service. I'm a fan for life.
 
Whoa, so if you buy any used Leupold, and it's not externally/obviously damaged by the past owner, you're good to go? Korth will fix or replace it for you if it stops working, assuming it's not your fault?

If it's really that easy, I'm gonna have to spend some time on EE!
 
I've bought Leupold scopes at garage sales in rough shape for next to nothing and Korth fixed them for free.Harold
 
Go pick up a decent used Bushnell Elite4200 in 8-32X40mm for your .243 man, it's perfect for both hunting and range planking.
 
do not buy a Nikon, customer service is absolutely terrible. The nikon rep on this site keeps lying to me. nikon canada is a totally different company than nikon usa and they really need to get their **** together.

Actually, for 99.9% of deer hunting, it's probably close to the worst choice imaginable. I think the OP's original thoughts are much closer to the mark. A Leupold (used or new) in 3-9x or maybe 4-12x will be much more versatile.

I am not sure how much more versatile are between 3-9x and 4-12x.LOL. I think the op's want something more for deer hunting and range planking to 200...so forget about 3-9x or 4-12x.....8-32x is 100% better and more effective you see...now,for example, I will set my scope on 8x for deer hunting, 24x-32x for 200+ for range planking...now i can imagine it...it's perfected:rolleyes:

Doesn't Sightron make a model that goes up to 60x?

Wow...I'll bet that one would be even "better and more effective".
 
Instead of the Nikon have a look at the Burris C4 scopes the 3-9x40 is around the 300.00 mark. It has a evelation turret marked in MOA and windage etched on the reticle, once you decide on your load for the 243 you can send that info into Burris and they will send you a new custom turret calibrated to that load for no Charge, one free with the purchase. From the reviews I've read the optic quality and tracking on these C4 scope is suppose to very good.
Just something you might want to consider.

Who's kicking sand at each other???...I gave my opinion base on mine years of hunting and planking experience to the op's, and everyone else have their own opinion also on what it will work or what doesn't....not ego's.

Sightron are nice if it's between the two mentioned leupold I like vortex! Too..... I'd pick a vortex over a Nikkon I have both.... I'd pick a sightron over some vortex stuff though.... I like leupolds high end stuff there base stuff is meh..... Bushnell I guess if it's a higher end but I won't buy another unless it's for a good price and something higher end..... I can't wait for that new sightron1x7x24 tac. Burris hey? Have t looked into really any of Myers glass yet ? What about warranty

I don't think you will be able to buy that sightron for 300.00
 
So far this is what I have gathered:

Leupold: The $300 range in Canada will get you a VX1. The VX1 gives you Leupold's brand name, the leupold ruggedness, leupold eye relief/objective, and excellent warranty. However, the glass itself is bested or matched by almost everything in the $200 range (in my experience), and friction vs click turrets.

Nikon: $300 gets you a new Monarch 2-8x32, or a prostaff 5 2.5-10x42mm. The monarch will give you much better clarity than the leupold, a great turret system and very forgiving eyebox.

Vortex: The diamondback is avail for around $200-250. The glass is super clear in the center, but kind of iffy on the edges (from my experience). I would step up to a Viper 3-9x40mm which is just over $300 in some places. I think it would blow away the leupold (clarity wise) and be pretty much on par with the Nikon, however the Vortex warranty is ironclad.
