Suggest some decent pre 46 prohibs for the range and to pass on please.

I just found out my father in law has his 12.6 and is looking to keep his gun collection in the family.
My wife has agreed to get her restricted PAL so that she can inherit her fathers pre 1946 pistols.

Being the good man he is he would like to expand his collection first so she can inherit some really nice pieces.

He is looking for some good quality guns that can be enjoyed at the range that will take some wear and tear.

Having very little experience with older prohib pistols in .32 and .25 i would appreciate some advice.
 
If you want some 12/6 then I would say a luger would be at the top of the list followed by a Walther PP in .380 (extremely difficult to find these days, I know I'm actively looking for one) and a ppk. At the risk of drawing the ire of the Milsurp crowd a lot of the smaller 25's and 32's aren't worth bothering about especially when you consider that both 32 and 25 are considerably more expensive than 9mm.

A few of the classic prohib length barrel S&W revolvers would be nice to play with as well. A 2.5 to 3 inch barrel Model 10 is a particularly nice size to use for competitions such as IDPA. And the 4 inch versions balance so nicely in the hands for regular shooting. And who could honestly say that they would not like to try the shortest little 1.5" detective special now and then?

So my list?

  • Walther PPK
  • S&W or Colt prohib lengths in .38Spl from 4" down to "stupid short". Probably a 4", 2.5 or 3" and one of the silly short detective special guns.
  • Luger
  • an honest to gosh true small size derringer just because everyone should get to shoot them to see just how bad they really are... :D

That would be my "must have" prohib list if I were in this lucky position. Other options would be mostly nice to have discoveries from that point on.

I would not change anything on this list.
Only one I don't have yet is the derringer
 
A nice Luger or a Broomhandle would probably top my list. I'm not old enough to have any 12x licensing and the restricted length ones tend to go a little out of my price range. :(
 
Nobody has mentioned Savage 1907... ...ten round staggered mag with niffty partial rotating barrel slide deaccelerator, and very art deco.

Of course he could start passing some on to her now. He doesn't have to pass away before he can pass on an inheritance. Of course as soon as she has her 12(7), she can pass them on to you so you can get your 12(7). As long as you have one each you'll keep the 12(7), or in the father's case his 12(6).

Here i was thinking that it was only pre 46 .25 and .32 caliber pistols. The rules can be hard to follow along with, not that they try to make it that way by any means.. :rolleyes:
Anything before 46 really opens things up. Now to start researching and shopping!

Yes as soon as she gets her 12.7 he will start passing them on to her
