SKS barrel shortening

Just wanted to know if anyone had tried cutting and re finishing an SKS barrel. I was thinking of cutting it down to just before the gas system port. Any thoughts?

For what purpose? Less accuracy on an already not so accurate rifle? The cutting and re-crowning to take off an inch or two is not worth the bother. Never mind gas pressure issues. If you have to ask, then you don't already possess the skills to do so. My advice to you is to save your money and effort, and put it into the rifle that you really want to own and shoot. You won't turn lead to gold with an SKS, so why ruin a good rifle to learn this on your own? The only value that will be left of your rifle is to a 30 year old who still lives in their Mom's basement. If you got money to throw away, spend it on ammo to improve your shooting skills at a good range.

What a great spirit! How dare someone come up with an idea that would require them to step outside the norm. As for the skill comment- just wow. I mean really. It's a cheap rifle to start with( they give them away for FREE when you buy enough ammo), why not tinker with it. But I guess an individual like yourself doesnt possess the spirit to try something above their skill level; you know, push pass their comfort zone and learn something new.

But hey, thanks for your valuable contribution to the thread.

It's your rifle bud,to do what you will with. On an open forum there's bound to be difference of opinion and Fiddler was expressing his. I feel pretty well the same way but if you like to tinker and wanna do it have at her and let us know how it turns out.

I should note that with it being semi auto you could only remove barrel down to just a hair above 18.5 inches barrel length before it became prohib, or with a new barrel, restricted. I vaguely remember something about the 18-18.5 inch range becoming restricted but I've never really payed close attention to that so I'll need someone to correct or back me up on that.

18.5" (actually 470mm) is the limit to remain non-restricted as a semi-auto centerfire. 18" (457mm) is the limit for becoming a prohibited firearm.

I have a 1952 that was in bad shape when I got it. The end of the barrel look like someone had taken a hammer to it. So I cut it down to 18" 5/8 and recrowned it . Shoots great (for an sks) about 2-2 1/2 inches at 100yds. It feels alot different ,than my standard sks's. I thinks it feels better, more even, better balanced etc. Next up is to do the ak mag machining and new front mounting lug on the reciever.I want to try and float the barrel. That also means redoing the gas tub ,cutting it and making it more like the cz/vz (no tub from the gas port to the sight base) just a piece, at the gas tub end to let the gas piston slide back and fourth. I figured that this sks was not a show piece when I got it, so no harm in doing the mods. Also I have most of the winter's off work and need to fill in my time, so I don't go crazy,or maybe with all the work I'm doing on an sks ,I'm aready crazy!!!! I have other sks's "as new" and they can stay that way.

Totally open to people expressing themselves, but when it is in a matter such as that, well I feel the point is lost. If you can see what I am getting at.

Your going to get alot of heat from the "purist" but at the end of the day , do what you want!!, do what you like!! make it your own. Paint it black,or pink or John Deere green . As soon as I can get a good pic of my sks, l'll post it for all to see, and you know and I know ,there are going to be people the love it and people that are going to burn me at the stack....have fun with your sks and look around the forum ,there lots of mods to look at for your sks.
