Any body else use an Antler Trap, to collect Antlers this Time of Year? I use two layers of plastic snow fence, strung tightly between two trees. Sprinkle you bait (grain) where fence joins ground. When the bucks eat the grain, the snow fence gets hooked on the antler, and hopefully it's there in the morning. There are all kinds of commercial ones on the Internet for ideas. I usually start mine around Christmas, and have collected antlers as late as March. Sorry I can't post pics...I have lots available by Email @. deerdr@nbcsmail.com. Respectfully Jim

Out of curiousity (and ignorance about the biology) - what happens if the antler ISN'T ready to come off? Does the buck just get stuck there? Or are pretty much ALL antlers ready to drop by this time?

I'm assuming you know what you're doing judging from the name. ;) Either way it's a cool idea... did you come up with that on your own?

The ones I have seen use bungie cords strung around a feed pail.as the deer sticks its head in to eat the bungies grab the antlers. The bungies will cause antlers ready to fall drop, but allow the deer to get away without getting tangled if the antlers aren't ready to drop. Snow fence can potentially entangle antlers if they don't drop. I would look at using something that doesn't actually snare the antlers.

I have several picks of them, just backing out, also the plastic snow fence flexes readily.Shedding of antlers happens over a couple month period, from mid Dec. to mid Feb. But like everything in nature there are always early and late ones.Getting hooked, and not losing the antler does not seem to bother them, they commence eating immediately. Deer Dr.

paige wire wrapped around round bales works. The best I've seen is a trough with a restrictive top rail so only antlerless deer can put their heads in. Bucks keep trying throughout the season until their heads fit. Many push their antlers off right at the feeder.

I saw an article on this in Filed and Stream (I think) a few years ago and it is a common practice. As long as you are allowed to bait in your area I don't think there is a legal issue with it. I walk fence lines myself, but in 30 years in the bush I have yet to find a shed. I have however found them mounted to a plaque in the dump, does that count?

No "Lovie" the ones in the dump don't count. LOL Walk the runways and areas where deer feed AT THIS TIME OF YEAR. But I've heard of some huge mounted whitetail racks discarded over the years.
