norinco 7.62 from canada ammo in m1as- anyone doing it?

Is that because of the primer? One reason I was leaning towards this was figuring the brass would be useful....

The Norc ammo is steel cased and copper washed. While some have tried reloading steel cases, I think this would be hard on your dies. It's generally not recommended and I personally only reload brass.

thanks again-didn't initially understand that point about the cases.

I'd be concerned pushing a copper washed steel bullet down a steel barrel.......

Regular lead core jacketed bullet.....its the case that is steel with copper wash.

The bullets themselves have a micron coating of copper and are very magnetic without the case. Its got to be hard on the rifling. I know this because I have a case of them. They came in the green Norinco paper boxes, surplus rounds made in '95 and bought last year.

The Swiss used cupro-nickel plated steel jacket bullets for 100 years without issue in the 7.5x55....and they didn't have chrome lined bores in their rifles either. Really not an issue.

The canammo Norc .308 is very accurate surprisingly in my m14s , also i shot just a few rounds through my r700 out of curiosity and it shot damn near better than any non match factory ammo i have tried WTF?! But i think its mildly corrosive because i did get a bit of rust in my m14 gas tube after leaving it uncleaned for awhile , it wiped off and left no pitting at least so be careful.

worried about the cost of feeding my m1a.

i thought i'd read that the norinco .223 seemed pretty... 'hot'.

any comments on their 7.62? seems like a decent price.

All I've ever shot through my M305 is the Norc 7.62 and it works fine. I've inspected the spent casings and have seen no indications of cracking or headspace issues (base cracking). NATO standard 7.62 is a lower pressure than .308 so if it's chambered for .308 it can handle the pressure from 7.62x51mm. The chamber can handle at least twice the pressure that the cartridge can. The brass is the weak link in the equation, if it is not cracking casings, your chamber won't explode.

The dimensions of the two cartridges are slightly different but the tolerances overlap, so in most rifles, it will work. Also, my bolt is not loose when a round is chambered, and not protruding open so that's a good indication that it fits decent.

Note: NATO 5.56 runs higher pressure than most .223 so don't run 556 in your 223, but it "should" be safe to run 223 in your 556.

How i figure it is it will prob work.

However I spent just over 4K on my m1a in an ebr stock and scope if it blows up due to krap ammo def not worth it just to save afew buck. But thats just me
